Okay, sports fans!
I've got just a few minutes before the SERMACS planning session begins, so let me catch up my progress.
When we last tuned in, I was in a holding pattern, waiting for word back from the River Street folks.
Then I had the trip to Charleston for the VA, the time in Orlando, doing SeaWorld and going to Disneyworld with the Parkers, clutch shift cable issues and being sidelined in Saint Augustine, then baseball, baseball, and baseball.
In fact, the baseball even affected the meeting, changing it from a Monday to a Wednesday.
Let's see how the science story unfolded, shall we?

RE: SERMACS Steering Committee

Jim and Will,
I will be leaving town earlier than expected on Monday, June 10th, so I will not be present for the meeting.
I do want to report that I have been in contact these past weeks with Victoria Smith, Executive Director of the Savannah Waterfront Association. She had a meeting this past Thursday with the City of Savannah and was going to bring our request to their attention. I have not yet heard back, but expect to this week.
I have also been in contact with Patti Galvan of the ACS Office of Science Outreach. She has been quite helpful with ideas for hands-on demonstrations, but we are both awaiting those demos which will be part of NCW 2019. The publication date for that information is early August.
I know I will also miss the July 8th meeting, as I have tickets for the All-Stars baseball game that evening.
I hope all goes well tomorrow night.
I will be sure to keep you apprised of progress with the NCW demo on River Street.

Elizabeth,

Thanks for contacting me!
The activities to be performed have not yet been determined, as ACS does not present the NCW activities on their site until August 1.
As for the exact time and location for our SERMACS Sunday public outreach, that is in the works. I am currentlly waiting for word from the City of Savannah and the Savannah Watrfront Association. They had a meeting last week and our request was to be included on their agenda.
Basically, we are moving forward, but rather slowly.
As soon as I have an update, I'll be glad to let you know!

Dr. Smith,
This is Chelsea Miller and I am taking the lead on the local section of the YCC. We were interested in helping with your
SERMACS event. We have the ability to get funds through the YCC too if we need! So if you would like our participation and
funding we are wanting to be involved in some way!

How do we proceed at this time? Is there any paperwork we need to submit?

RE: Request - Rousakis Plaza

Good afternoon, Ms. Washington!
I represent the Coastal Empire section of the American Chemical Society. This fall, we are hosting the South East Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, aka SERMACS 2019.
https://www.sermacs2019.org/

The four-day conference will be held at the Savannah Riverfront Marriott, beginning on Sunday, October 20, 2019. That date is also the first day of National Chemistry Week.
We would like to hold a community outreach event on that Sunday afternoon, at Rousakis Plaza, if possible.
How would we arrange to do so? We will have plenty of personnel to perform the demonstrations. Do we need a permit for our event? Is the Plaza available for that date and time? Is there a cost involved?
I look forward to talking to you about our event!
Sincerely,
Faustina Smith

Good Evening Ms. Smith,
Currently, there is an event scheduled on Rousakis Plaza that weekend. Please let me know if there is another location you may be interested in.
I have attached our application for permit along with the policies and fees for your review. The fees required are the permit fee, maintenance deposit, and security.

Thank you,
Georcette

RE: Request - Rousakis Plaza

Georcette,
Thank you for sending the rules and regulations document. That greatly helped!
I have a better understanding now of our options.
I would like to know if Emmett Park or Morrell Park might be available for the Sunday, October 20th, early afternoon for our public outreach STEM event?
Of course, our first preference would be the more visible Rousakis Plaza.
However, as a Savannah native, I've always had a fondness for The Waving Girl in Morrell Park, so I will refer my group to that as an alternate site, should it be available.
Would you happen to have the availability of those two alternates?
(smile)

Thanks so much,
Faustina

next SERMACS meeting date

Will and Jim,
I have heard back from the Office of Special Events, Film, and Tourism, the group which handles all permits for use of the
squares and parks in Savannah. We need to consider alternate sites, as well as the rules for our "public gathering" event, including mandatory security requirements. This is something which needs to be discussed at our next SERMACS meeting, which is currently scheduled for Monday, July 8th. Is that correct?
If so, I cannot attend on that date. I have had tickets for the All-Star Showdown for several months and will be at Grayson
Stadium that night.
Could the meeting be moved to the following Monday, perhaps?
Pretty please, with sugar on top?

* So, as good fortune would have it, the July 8th meeting was postponed (due to Bananas' play-off) until 10 July, so I was able to make it, loaded for bear, with a map of the two parks avaliable for NCW event, measurements and photos of Morrell Park, plus copies of the rules and an application already filled out and waiting to be approved.
Yippeekiyah, as John McClane would say!
