no fade bear this month!

Fade bear?
What's that, right?
That's the soft-furred, massive beast that wraps you snugly in its arms and draws a velvety paw across your eyes, enticing you to relax... and to sleep... soundly and completely.
I have been far too busy to allow that bear to capture me.
Once I had confirmed volunteers, there were materials to run and fetch, advertising to procure, volunteers to keep enthusiastic.
After all, tomorrow is the big day!!!
So, what's been going on?
Kindly step this way, please!
The show will be starting soon enough!

Will,
Signage for the "Afternoon with Chemistry: A National Chemistry Week Event" would be great.
It would need to include the time (1:00 to 4:00 PM) and location (Morrell Park on River Street, home of The Waving Girl).
Is there anything else needed?

NCW event materials

Hi, Cathy!
I hope the materials have arrived from ACS? The books, the bags, the balloons, the banner, et al?
Also, I have not yet received the invoice from City of Savannah for the Maintenance Deposit. As you may recall, that was the refundable fee for clean-up. Have you received that invoice?
I will call SCMPD tomorrow to arrange for the required security detail. Only two officers should be required. I will let you know if they require a deposit, though it should actually be paid on the day of the event.
Woohoo!
Will has garnered some volunteers. I knew I had zero clout for that, as none of the students know me. Too bad we don't have an Alpha Chi Sigma chapter or we would have had plenty of volunteers!
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Tina

Hi Tina,
It was great talking with you. The items will likely leave the ACS building on Monday. I’ll let you know when they go and I receive the tracking numbers.
These are the write-ups for the activities we discussed.
· Penny for your Drops
· Copper Etching (take home: copper sticker with your design)
· Combining Liquids with Water
· Self-Inflating Balloons (take home: one self-inflating balloon)
· Build a Battery
· ChemCatcher
Plan B Activities
· Clean Pennies with Ketchup ( I cannot seem to find the write-up for this one yet
· UV beads (we talked about this one months ago)
If you are able to get tables, we will need one for each activity. The self-inflating balloon activity can be done without a table, but having one keeps people from grabbing as many balloons as they can carry and leaving. We usually have a welcome table and a separate exit table, but this is up to you. This is how we use the welcome and exit tables.
· Welcome table
· This is a great place to arrange and distribute the goggles and give any instructions you may have. This is also a good place to station someone to count kids and adults who participate in your event.
· Exit table
· You will collect goggles here and trade them for something special that kids want. We typically trade a goody bag in exchange for returning the goggles. We also do a simple survey at the exit table. On the phone call, we talked about showing the activity “Do Chemistry with a Penny” and giving kids the Marvelous Metals issue of Celebrating Chemistry.
If you are not able to get tables, perhaps disposable plastic tablecloths or picnic blankets on the ground will work. This assumes that kids and volunteers will sit on the ground, which may not work for everyone. I will bring trays so that no matter what the arrangement is, to help facilitate traffic flow, define space, and keep supplies together.
I owe you the write-up for A Penny for your Drops. I suspect that I accidentally deleted it, so will need to re-write that one.
Best,
Patti

I had an excellent conversation - more than 90 minutes! - with Patti earlier today and she will be sending the supplies for all of the demonstrations. She is also supplying goggles for the audience and suggested the demonstrators all bring their own, as we must observe safety rules.
She and I determined that six tables would be needed. Do you know where we might obtain them? Would the Marriott loan them or should we seek elsewhere?

Ok!
I am to bring the check to her office on Monday.
As we are expecting 300 people, the check needs to be for $350.00 to City of Savannah.
Their office will not be depositing the check, simply holding it.
As long as we leave Morrell Park neat and tidy, the check never will be cashed.
We can certainly do our own clean up!
Is there a time on Monday, maybe around noon or so, that I can stop by for this?

Public Outreach event on October 20

Laura,
I attended your talk for the Naturalist 101 series at One Hundred Miles and very much enjoyed it. I was especially interested in the activity book, "Saving Savannah's Water". I had spoken to you about perhaps obtaining copies for giveaway at our National Chemistry Week event, scheduled for early afternoon on Sunday, October 20.
You had asked that I wait until our event was about a month out, then to contact you.
So... here I am, hat in hand, so to speak.
We are hoping for about 300 middle-school students to attend our event in Morrell Park.
Would it be possible to obtain that many copies of the activity book?
Hoping for the best,

NCW event in two weeks!

Hello, everyone!
I look forward to meeting you on Sunday, October 20, if not before!
We have possession of Morrell Park, on River Street, from 1 PM to 4 PM that afternoon.
Hopefully, we can set up the six tables in about thirty minutes, so we can begin demonstrations about 1:30 PM. We will then need to start putting all away at 3:30 PM, to give us plenty of time to clean up and leave the park at least as beautiful as we find it.
We are planning on having three hundred students, hopefully in 4th to 8th grades, in attendance.
If you know anyone with kids in that age range, please encourage them to tell their classmates!
We have at least five demonstrations and hands-on activities, plus goodie bags for all!
We will have badges for us to wear, so those will be our souvenirs. :-)
Let's see, what else? Oh, yes, wear sunscreen and please bring your goggles. Safety first!
I've attached a few photos and will send along the write-ups for the demonstrations in the next few days.
Morrell Park is the first park on River Street, coming from the Marriott.
https://www.savannah.com/park-morrell-park/
It is 236 feet long by 26 feet wide and has a wide sidewalk bordering it.
We can set up to either side of The Waving Girl and have plenty of room!
Woohoo!
This is going to be such fun...
and I absolutely could not do it without YOU.
Many thanks!

Where are you going to put the flyer? Is it the flyer that we are going to hand to people? It Is nice that there is an explanation of the event. However, I think, nowadays, people have a short attention span so they will not bother of reading it. I think it should consist of just what, when and where with bigger and bold font. For local ACS recognition, the logo can be put on the bottom. Thank you.

The cost for the officers comes to $256.00 ($128.00 per officer), in the form of Cash, Money Order or Local Check. It a four hour minimum at $32.00 an hour (Sunday rate). Also there's a two hour cancellation policy, if you need to cancel please contact me at 912-665-0307 or Sgt. Steven Kohles at 912-658-2333 at 11:00AM. If the officers show up for your event, they will need to be paid in full.
Warm Regards
Cheers

Hi, Cathy!
I plan to come by on Thursday to pick up the NCW materials.
Perhaps we can talk about the best way to handle the money for the security detail then? I don't know that we will have the names of the two officers until the actual day of our event.
Thanks, as always!

one more week to our event!

Happy Saturday, everyone!
On Thursday, I received three boxes of materials from ACS for our NCW event! Balloons! Bracelet beads! Copper sticker materials!
On Thursday, I will pick up the materials from Dr. MacGowan. That will not only include the "Celebrating Chemistry" activity books, but also the cool buttons for us to wear!
To make sure the buttons have maximum visibility, I am
asking everyone to please wear a solid-color top, not ones which have any designs printed on them. I also recommend long pants (in case of gnats) and comfortable shoes. Oh, and lest I forget: sunscreen! We will be out there for several hours.
I am planning to be at Morrell Park by 12:30 PM that day, even though we will not be able to set anything up until 1 PM, when we take possession. I look forward to meeting all of you then, if we have not yet met!
We will have kid-sized goggles for the participants, as well as some regular goggles. I highly recommend that you bring your favorite goggles, as you will be wearing them for quite a while. :-)
I also recommend that you bring water to stay hydrated.
How about advertising?
Our event will be listed in next week's issue of Connect Savannah... and is already listed with DO Savannah!!!
https://www.dosavannah.com/calendar?_ev_id=532395_an_afternoon_with_chemistry!
Please feel free to share the link on your facebook or linked in or twitter accounts! I have done so, as well as sharing the flyer.
What else?
Oh, yes, the tables! We will have six folding tables dropped off at Morrell Park at 1 PM on the day of the event, thanks to Dr. Lynch and Dr. Hizer. I do hope we will be able to quickly get them into place and set up!
Please make a note of my phone number. I do not have a smart phone, so I will have no access to email on October 20th.
Okay... questions? Suggestions? All are welcome!

I don't tweet, but I have promoted the event on my fb page and linkedIn account.
WRHQ has the event on their website.
I checked with Cumulus Media yesterday, but they had no avenue online for adding our PSA. If you know anyone in broadcast media at the big radio clusters or tv stations, that would be wonderful!
Several of my friends teach and have spread the word at their schools - yeah!
I'm trying to make sure lots of kids show up... so all we're carrying out of the park is empty bags!

GREAT JOB Tina! I got Todd Hizer to pick up tables from campus on Sunday October 20, 2019. He will drop off the tables and then come back later to pick them up. Do you have a specific time you want the tables down at the park?

Cathy, I can be there by 11 AM on Thursday. Yeah!
As for the tables, Will told me he had arranged for Todd to drop the six tables off at the park at 1 PM on Sunday, Then pick them back up around 4 PM. Correct? I am hoping to have folks there by 1 PM to get the tables set up and ready for business by 1:30. We're going to be hoppin', I hope! :-)
Ok, see you on Thursday!

Re: package arrived!

Hi Tina,
There will be another box arriving today or within the next couple of days. This contains most of the supplies for the activities. I sent this box directly from the event in Milwaukee, so the items are not as organized as I would like them to be.
The Build-A-Battery activity worked so well. I also have some new lenses so the
I am so glad that we will have tables! This will make everything flow much better.

Excellent!
I will be watching for that extra box, Patti.
I have transferred the stuff from the boxes into tote bags, as that will be easier to manage, I hope.
Plus, the trash generated can just go back into the totes for easy clean up at the end.
When will you be in Savannah?

Re: package arrived!

Hi Tina,
My flight arrives on Wednesday afternoon. My time will be flexible. Mainly, I will be staying with my Dad and visiting a few friends, until the event on Sunday. I have a fun trivia-and-prizes presentation at 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoon in the Member CafĂ©. On Monday, David Horwitz and I will co-present the Outreach Training program with a couple of members from the Committee on Community Activities. It’s a full-day workshop. Then on Tuesday, I head back, because Wednesday is Mole Day and we have some plans at the ACS buildings.
If you’d like, I can go through the items on Thursday or Sunday and sort them so that there is one tote per activity. I can bring tote bags as I have many. This will make it much easier and quicker to set-up. I was not able to pack as efficiently as I had hoped while cleaning up in Milwaukee. We didn’t have much time between the outreach event and the conference opening ceremony! My volunteers were excellent, but I did not check through everything before throwing it all in the box. You will see!
Let me know if you’d like to meet with me at some point Thursday or Saturday of this week for packing and if it would make you feel more comfortable, a preview of the activities. Friday, morning could work, too. I plan to head to Tybee on Friday early afternoon to visit with a friend who lives out there.
Best,
Patti

Re: package arrived!

Patti, more tote bags would be great, especially if they are ACS or NCW branded.
Thursday afternoon and evening will be great for me, though Friday morning could also work. I live in midtown, so I'm practically on your way to Tybee.
Please call to let me know as your schedule unfolds.
I'll be picking up "Celebrating Chemistry" and the other NCW materials from Cathy MacGowan on Thursday morning, out southside at GA So U, Armstrong campus. I expect to be home after that.
Woohoo!

Happy Saturday, y'all!
After tonight, the skies will clear and we will be good to go!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNvYpXwJ2kA&feature=youtu.be
As the ground will probably still be damp, I will be repacking the totes to make sure all items remain dry. There will be a total of 14 or 15 tote bags.
I recommend long pants and comfortable shoes, as well as sunscreen.
I also remind everyone to please remember your goggles.
Please remember to wear a shirt or T-shirt which is one color, for easy visibility of the Volunteer button.
What else?
I will be at Morrell Park between 12:15 and 12:30 PM.
I ask that you plan to be there before 1 PM, as that is when we take possession of the park and is the earliest the 6 tables are allowed to be delivered. I will have the tote bags organized for each table, so set up should be quick and easy.
I have attached the activities we will be performing. I have also printed them so each table will have at least two copies of each.
Patti Galvan was at my house yesterday and we did a run-through, with great results! I've attached photos for three of those activities. :-) The kids are going to love those!
This will most likely be my final email.
Please be sure to call me for any questions, especially tomorrow.
Let's get ready to spread the good word about chemistry!
with many thanks,
Faustina Smith
