I was in Pooler,

at the Royal

and our luncheon

I had carefully selected the movie times to allow for a leisurely dine at Slapfish, but it was gone.

That's okay, we still had seafood!

We had two fabulous sports movies, too!

Both were set in the 1950's, though we hadn't realized they had that in common.

The first was "The Long Game", featuring a a group of teenaged, Mexican-American, golfers, in Texas, called the San Felipe Mustangs.

They won the State Championship in 1957, a year before I was born.

I told Barbara I'm going to recommend that one to my brother, Smitty, as he loves golf.

The second movie, "Maidaan", was an Indian film.

Nope, no Bollywood in this one, just futbol - i.e., "soccer" - and lots of it!

The focus was firmly on the football coach, Syed Abdul Rahim, who was under constant attack for using players from all over India, rather than only choosing those from the state of Bengal.

The film begins in 1952, with the Indian team being soundly defeated, 10 -1, in the Asian Games, leading the council to want a new coach.

Instead, he convinces them to allow him full rein to choose the best players from all over India, with him being solely responsible for their losses.

The movie then followed him on his scouting trips, on the training of the players, and on their trips to the Olympics in the intervening years (a feat no other Indian team has managed in the last 62 years).

The film ends with their successful - Gold!!! - entry at the 1962 Asian Games.

Very exciting... but also a bit sad for me.

The coach had lung cancer for several years, and died in 1962.

1962.

That was the year my brother Ronnie was born...

and he died of lung cancer...

and would have been 62 years old in July this year.

I snapped the photo of the sun setting as we were done, with the palm trees lending a tropical flair and reminding me what a special day this has been.

I am so glad that October is over and done at the cinema!

At one point, there were at least three horror movies playing, reducing my choices.

Not now!

The holidays are upon us and family movies - plus Oscar hopefuls - are filling the screens.

What that means, of course, is now I have too many choices.

What a lovely problem to have!

 

This week's theme was kid movies, and I've seen all my A*List dance card allows since Monday, when I had a holiday outing with the four little blondes!

As I said then, "Trolls Band Together" is most def my favorite in that series.

Great music, over several different decades and genres, perfect for dancing afterward up near the screen while the credits rolled!

The next two were seen as a doubleheader today.

Yeah, it's been a while since I did one of those!

"Next Goal Wins" was a second viewing for me, but I do so love this soccer movie!

Who knows, I just may see it a third time yet, if it hangs around.

As for the third movie in my A*List, that's brand-new, as "Wish" just opened Friday.

Very nice, though a bit rebellious, and very much like "Moana" in a lot of ways.

I did like that the girl had freckles on her face... gave her some spunk!

 

So, what about that interim day twixt Monday and today?

Tina Tuesday was spent at the Royal of Pooler for Bollywood!

Well, actually, "Tiger 3" was more straight-up action, though it did have two dances.

It also had Salman Khan and a special cameo with... Shah Rukh Khan, his cousin!!!

That made driving in the rain all the way out there worthwhile for me... kinda sorta.

If only I hadn't had to drive back, too, that would have been nice, but, as the movie let out before rush hour traffic and the rain had stopped, I was okay.

It had all been Barbara's plan, for me to drive the two of us to Pooler.

No asking me if I would prefer otherwise, just her opting to drive the shorter trip to Tybee last Friday in exchange for me ferrying us on Tuesday.

So, the plan I made was to meet her at the AMC and then to go in my car.

Nope.

She changed that plan, as she had ordered muffins from Rambam, so she would meet me at my house at 11 AM and we'd go from there.

Nope.

She changed that plan, too, as she spent too much time hobnobbing with acquaintances there, so she wanted me to come and pick her up...

on a morning that was gray and rainy...

when it was already past the agreed meeting time.

Nope.

She gave me the wrong directions to where she would be waiting, causing yet another delay, so, after a call to her that just increased my tension, I told her "Not today."

Then I left for Pooler, to try a new way I'd worked out that avoided interstates...

with their roadwork going on...

but still driving in the rain...

on a shortened time line... 

thanks to her controlling nature.

Granted, I'm a control freak, too, which is why I can recognize it easily in her.

Right?

Most of the time I can let it slide, but... not today.

There were too many parameters at play and her continual changes made it harder on me than it should have been.

Here's the rest of the story: we both made it to Pooler on our own, meeting up within minutes of our arrivals at the cinema there.

I had time to enjoy the Canadian geese as they pondered the palm trees.

No doubt they had thought the wet parking lot was a pond.

Poor things!

So, being at my destination in a timely fashion, and having the opportunity to marvel at nature and migrating birds, all added up to me being more relaxed than I had been.

She and I were able to have fun at the movie, her a row behind my seat - 

as she had not informed me of her seat designation when she had me go ahead and buy my ticket online last week. 

That worked out, though, didn't it?

Right place, right time.

I do so love these little workings of the Universe.

day 3 of i miss my car: italy, india, and hawaii

Barbara texted last evening.

She was wanting to see a movie and thought I might be restless.

She already knew my car was in the shop.

I had texted her all about it earlier yesterday when I let her know I would not be able to make our planned movie outing on Sunday (today) for the new Agatha Christie movie.

So she knew she would have to come from southside to midtown to fetch me, go back to southside to the AMC cinema, then take me home to midtown before returning southside to her part of town...

but she made the invitation anyway.

"Would I like to go see "Jawan" - and Shah Rukh Khan - again?"

Of course I would!

I had just started "Ghostbusters" - the REAL one, from forty years ago - on Peacock, but it was an easy choice to put that on hold.

And off we went to India again with our favorite Bollywood man!

We even danced "with" him to three of the numbers: 1) Azad - 30yo prison warden - with the female prisoners; 2) Azad with Narmada, the police negotiator and his fiancee; and 3) the big finale, with Azad and 58yo Vikram and the whole cast!

I even danced a bit for the number between the 28yo Vikram and his wife, Aishwarya.

Such a nice trip to India!

Today, she was here by 2 PM for our virtual trip to Italy.

Specifically, we traveled to Venice, a town I've only 'visited' via the The Venetian.

That was from the 2010 trip to Las Vegas, for the part of the week when my BFF Sam had come out to share time after Paul and Cathy returned home.

She and I rode in a gondola as the gondolier sang to us, under the perfect (painted) sky above and the past the colorful (painted) landscape -molto bello!

Today, however, mi amiga and I only got to watch a gondola on the silver screen.

That was fine, though!

The screen was the Big-D one, so it was much larger than life!

"A Haunting In Venice" had been marketed as if it were a horror movie.

Nope!

Another case of a preview maker not having a clue... 

which is especially funny as this was a murder mystery film!

Yes, pun intended!

Very nice movie, though I would have liked to have seen more of the town.

Good to have two spaces filled on my A*List dance card!

And good to treat mi amiga to dinner afterward!

I had promised a meal at Jason's Deli, knowing she likes their food.

She'd actually looked up the menu online, selecting the Hawaiian Salmon Bowl.

It looked pretty yummy on the poster, so I ordered that, too!

Off to the 50th state we sailed, as the sun lowered and the rain stopped.

Very nice, all the way around!

 

And now, I am home again.

Comcast has granted me a third $1 WMN Reward, surprisingly, so I've chosen another 1980's-era Michael Keaton movie from my past: "Night Shift".

It has "The Fonz" in it, too, as well as the "Cheers" waitress "Diane".

The title song, from Quarterflash, is playing on the mental jukebox already!

And just who is it that has my motor revved on the red line?

The Bollywood star I've been enamored of for almost two decades: Shah Rukh Khan!

These five photos are him as different characters in a single movie.

For real!

The first is definitely my favorite, though it comes in the last half of the movie.

He's a 30-year-old social justice vigilante, Azad, trying to right the wrongs of a greedy government and using his father's name to do so.

I absolutely ADORE that "Phantom Of The Opera" mask!!!

It positively makes me want to swoon!!!

The next one, though, is the one that really cranks up the speed!

That's actually near the end of the movie, a shot of the 58-year-old father, Vikram, reading a "Naughty Boy" magazine before the final Bollywood number.

FYI, 58 is the actor's age, so... RAWR!!!

The next two are with Azad in disguise, first as a homeless old man at the train depot, then as the bald hijacker of that train.

Oh, the wink he gave before shuffling onto the train!

Oh, how amazing it was that I even found him sexy as a bald man!

Then there's that last photo, of a 28-year-old Vikram dancing with his wife, who was Azad's mother, before his life was wrecked by an arms dealer, Kalee.

Such a nice mustache!

Such great dance moves in that third Bollywood dance number!

That's right, there were FOUR dance numbers, if you don't include the one where Azad's mom was pregnant with him in the prison.

I tend to include that as a fifth one, even though there were no men present.

Barbara and I got up and danced with SRK for that last one during the credits.

Such fabulous fun!

And the Indian couple in there with us was amazed that we had both seen the action-packed movie more than once!!!

What amazed me was 1) that AMC had it, and 2) it was A*List eligible.

So I actually had a dance movie twice on my dance card!!!

Honestly, "Jawan" would have taken all three slots had I not already promised Jackie two weeks ago that I would see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" with the Boomers.

Not that the 'trip to Greece' wasn't fun - 'cause it certainly was - and Nia Vardalos did us a great service with her recap of the previous two films before the start - and the cinematography was just gorgeous - but -

of course there's a "but" - 

it did not have that Bollywood zing to it and was lacking in SRK spice.

What can I say?

Barbara had been with me for both of my A*List movies the previous week - "Elemental" and then a first viewing of "Jawan" - and we had both been enthralled with the movie about the soldier who loses his memory and doesn't even know he has a son, and the son who thought his father had died before he was born.

Wow.

I hope it will be staying another week so I can watch it at least once more!

First, let me just say that is week is about taking care of business.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment for a "home health" visit from UHC's provider of such.

Accordingly, in preparation for having a stranger in my house, I've tidied up a bit.

 

See that dining room table?

That's the cleanest, and clearest, it has been in quite some time.

Though it does beg the question: Why do all that work?

This is a stranger who is coming, someone who knows nothing about me or my habits.

That means this person is not going to be aware of how much effort went into this scene.

So, why do it, and why have this visit from them?

Well, that last part is easy; I'm doing it for the money.

They come here, I get $15 in my UHC account.

That works for me!

The hearing test I had today was strictly to have something else to check off for UHC, too.

Caroline Zuk of Savannah Speech & Hearing found out that I do, indeed, have a hearing loss in my left ear.

That's from my days at FSU, and, specifically, from a delivery driver letting a metal grate slam onto the ground as I walked by.

It's not of concern yet, but should be checked in a year, she said.

Good to know!

And aren't these shadows cool?

And after a totally banal movie at AMC, I popped on over to the Royal of Pooler for a totally splendid film!

I've been keeping an eye on their listings and there have been Bollywood films there for two weeks!

I knew Barbara wouldn't be able to join me, now that she is back to tutoring in the prevenings... so, I took myself.

And guess who was there?

Mi amiga, Carolyn, who I haven't seen in weeks!

I wouldn't have seen her tonight, either, had she not come up to me after the movie.

And to think... she had been in the same row I was!

I'm so glad I went to "Dream Girl 2"!

For one thing, it was a love story, with lots of singing and dancing and that stuff I enjoy so much.

For another thing, it had a fellow I very much like: Ayushmann Khurrana, who was able to seamlessly transition from a very handsome man - with utterly gorgeous eyes! - to a quite beautiful woman.

Seriously!

And he did it all for love!

That's because he knew he could quickly make the money his true love's father demanded he have in order to be allowed to wed the girl.

Such a good movie!

And I'm so glad Carolyn had the same thought!

I stayed and chatted with her for about an hour.

She was making it a double, going to an after-9 Hindi movie, but that was too late for me.

I'll have to let my other amigas know that I've seen her and she's doing well.

Since she moved over to Garden City with someone in her church choir, she's out of our realm.

We'll have to do something about that!
