banana ball and a*list, too!

"Those two things do not go together. Did you mean 'banana ball and youTube', or perhaps something else?"

Nope! I meant what I said and I said what I meant!

"Then you got some 'splaining to do, dearie."

LOL! This ain't "The Jeffersons"! Still, I guess I should comply and let you know what's going on in March. I'll be going to Grayson Stadium with the four little blondes!!!

"That's wonderful!!! However did you manage that?"

Well, Christina had contacted me last week that Oatland Island was fundraising with the Savannah Bananas for the March 7th game. Did I want to go? DID I WANT TO GO??? "Yes," I told her, "I want to FOO @ Bananas with y'all!!!" So she bought me a ticket!!!

"Most excellent! I really like that phrase: Foo @ bananas. Hahaha!"

Me, too! Sounds like it'll be an amazing outing with them! But it gets even better...

"... because Michael has bought tickets and he and his girls will be there, too?"

Nope! Because I had promised Michael my five member tickets this year and Henry just opened the ticket exchange 'window' online... and March 7 was one of the dates I could swap my member tickets for!!! Hallelujah!!!

"How fortuitous!!! Who else is he bringing with his two extra tickets?"

I have no idea, they're his tickets, his choice. I'm just thrilled we will all be going together! Plus, we don't have to worry about wandering around looking for seats. These will all be over in right field in a brand-new seating area. It's still General Admission over there, but only folks with tickets to sit there will be allowed to do so. Woohoo!!!

"A new area past right field? That will sure be a different perspective for watching the game."

Yeah, like I actually watched the game last year. Remember? I had to watch it on youTube afterward to even see who had won! LOL!

"True, true. You had too much else going on!"

You got that right. And this weekend promises to be quite busy with PULSE18 and other events. In fact, that starts tonight, so I needed to finish up my AMC trio this afternoon. I only have one new dance on this A*List, but it's a very funny one, full of costume changes and misadventures! Keke Palmer is having "One Of Them Days" and it's hilarious! I hope to see it again next week, in fact.

"That A*List looks to be backwards then."

Hey, I can only show it the way AMC gives it.

"So you watched "Sonic The Hedgehog 3" again on Friday, then saw "Wicked Part One" yet again yesterday?"

Correct you are! And the only reason I went to Sonic again was for the 1000 Bonus points. AMC neglected to give them to me, but Tom made sure he added them for me. I had kept the ticket stub so he would have the proof. Gotta get those Bonus rewards! If I had known about the promotion last Tuesday, I would have seen Sonic instead of "Moana 2". No worries, though. I liked both of them!

"Very good. Hey, it's about time for PULSE at the Jepson, isn't it?"

Sure 'nough! Later chica!

ho-ho-holy shiite!

What a treat it's been to watch Santa Claus in action against those who have been naughty!
Just looking at him here, after he's hoisted a few pints in England, it's clear from his expression that he has had his fill of greedy children and naughty, naughty, people.
Then he's off to make his deliveries to the few children on the "Nice" list, eventually getting to Connecticut, for one gift on an estate full of naughty, naughty people.
Well, save, one, a little girl named Gertrude, who goes by the nickname Trudy.
She even baked cookies herself for Santa... and even gave him a candy cane.
The 1100 year old man really enjoyed all that!
Trudy is such a sweetheart that when the machine gun-toting naughty people have beat up on Santa and have him surrounded in a shed, she asks him what one wish he would wish at that moment, because he deserved some Christmas magic, too.
Nice, right?
That wish to see his wife again and tell her he loved her led to him finding a sledgehammer in that storage barn...
and, with Trudy's encouragement, he proceeds to make it a "Violent Night" for the naughty, naughty people by reverting back to his Viking past as Nicomund The Red.
Not that he relied on the sledgehammer alone.
Oh, no.
The things that man could do with a candy cane and a pair of ice skates - wooo weee!!!
Sheer artistry!
Many thanks to Comcast for the $1 Movie Night Reward!
Many thanks to David Harbour for truly bringing home the meaning of Christmas by his tender interactions with the little girl who still believed in magic!
I can totally relate to that.
I'm going to enjoy that message for the next two nights.

are we dancing yet?

You betcha!

Elvis and his six brothers are ready to keep me on the beat, too!

There's Wednesday, ThuRsday, and Friday, too, right arm swingin' to catch my attention,
with SAturday, SUnday, Monday, and Tuesday in step right behind them!

They aren't quite where they should be, though, so let me take a moment to place them all in a row on that cabinet door.

So, what's the weather like on this first day of a brand new year?

Quite brisk in the daytime it is, and absolutely miserable at night, that's what the weather is.

I have groceries, though, so I'm set for staying indoors and keeping busy with activities here.

For example, consider this wall.

This is what I refer to as the second wall in the dining room, and, as can be seen, it's adorned with programs from cultural blessings yet again.

In fact, this is the third time it's held mementos of plays and concerts and musicals from 2024.

Busy, vibrant, woman, indeed!
Time to clear the walls of all of those and make way for the events in 2025!

First, however, the time had come to replace the Renoir with something else.

My choice was Mama's Dollhouse.

I had done all of this embroidery for her while I was stationed in Okinawa, and I'm certain I sent it to her for her 44th birthday in 1981.

I knew I would not be home for that, so I had spent many and hour making the myriad of stitches that were needed for this two-story house with attic.

So very much love is in this piece!
And so very much love was written in the two-page letter to my future self, too.

At 3 PM this afternoon, I attended the Anticipation and Bowl Burning Ceremony, as I did last year.

Being greeted by the Tulip stationery was delightful; being acknowledged by Cheri as the source of that paper made me feel cherished!

My letter held congratulatory words to my future self, about specific changes and specific actions.

At the end of this year, when that letter arrives and I next see those flowers, I look forward to realizing that those things foretold had occurred.
That's what I found to be true when I read last year's letter as my gift to open on Christmas Eve.

Now, I'm going to rent "Violent Night" for a dollar, since I've been rewarded from Comcast.

Time to get my David Harbour fix...
and get ready for sweet dreams!

not Christmas gifts, just presents for the kids

That's what I told Tony and Laura as I set the bag of items under their tree.
I'd made sure the local great-nieces and great-nephews knew that no Christmas gifts would be forthcoming from me this year.
My budget's been that busted.
However, the "Gift Closet" in my living room still held items that had been intended as birthday presents for Tony's grand-kids, so I'd brought some of those.

For great-niece Carissa, I had a book from DEEP Center full of writings from Fall 2023 students.
Amazingly, she knew all the writers from her school, Oglethorpe Charter Academy!
I pointed out that I chose the book because it had
stories from Myers Middle School, which I went to
when I was her age (14).

I also gave her the Elephant Joke bracelet I'd brought for her in 2014, so many years ago.
That meant I had to tell her Mama's jokes about pachyderms painting their toenails so they could hide in jellybean jars and apple trees and watermelon patches and blueberry bushes.

For Bert and Sebi, ages 11 and 8 now, I had a box of "Super Mario Brothers" movie items which included a game they could play.
That had been a reward from Comcast.
As well as the game, there was a poster, an activity book, a popcorn bucket, and a package of microwave popcorn.

I added about ten packages of candy from the NCG kid-packs; they all have strawberry as the candy base.
That box of movie goodies was not all the Gift Closet
had for them.
It allowed me to add two activity books.
Those were both from Disney movies.
Lots of pages to color, lots of mazes to solve!
There are even puzzles to find differences in pictures,
as well as scrambled words to set right!
That should keep them busy during this winter break.
Then there's little Olivia, who's maybe 3.
The Gift Closet held the cuddly toy dog, in hopes that it
will soothe her fear of the overly-friendly -
but very large and muscle-bound - Dane.

For her, there are also tiny books for her little hands
to hold and look at while her mom reads them.

I have a Braves bobblehead of Spencer Strider for
great-nephew Dylan, but I knew he would not be there,
so that gift remains here, in the closet, waiting.

i thank You, God, to have that magical Gift Closet.

a*list with tailz

Note: That is -not- at typographical error.
That's how the alien being spells its name.
For real!
All the other aficionados at the special screening would agree with me.
That's Tailz in my hand here.
Actually, it's just the critter's head, designed as a keychain reward for those who came to the "Sonic The Hedgehog 3: Fan Event" at the 3 PM showing in the Big-D room.
I was there early this time, having missed out on the Lego rewards at the Fan Event for "Wicked" a couple of weeks back.
This time, AMC had plenty of the rewards, with four buckets of the character keychains, allowing patrons to choose which they wanted: Sonic, Tailz, Knuckles, or Shadow.
My first choice was Sonic, but Alicia let me swap him out for the foxy yellow guy with the ability to fly.
As it turns out, Tailz was a perfect fit for me!
He's the nerdy analytical member of the trio formed in the second movie, you see.
I'm the nerdy analytical member of any trio I'm in, too!
Well, most of the time, but not always!

Speaking of trio, this upbeat movie, filled with puns and inside jokes, was the perfect one to complete my dance card this week.
"The Order" and "Homestead" were a bit scary, given today's political climate in the USA.
The first one was real and the other was not, but both dealt with homeland terrorists.
Neither are anything I would see again.
But this movie today?
That had everyone there cheering on the good guys?
With everyone laughing at all the silly parts with Dr. Robotnik?
Plus lots of applause as each character entered the story, especially for Stone?
And everyone staying in their seats until the very last credit had rolled so they could see what would be forthcoming in the next adventure?
This was absolutely delightful!
I just may see it again tomorrow!
Meanwhile, I have a new Christmas ornament gracing my tree, right next to Melanie's snowflake and Mama's gingerbread house.
Isn't that smiling yellow face so cheerful?
Right place, right time!

bday87 party for Mama!

First of all, there was singing!

But not "Happy Birthday" on this occasion, oh, no!

The Cantabile and the Chorale of the Savannah Arts Academy Chorus performed for us at the Trinity United Methodist Church.

This was their "Voices Of The Season" concert and it was totally free!

We were greeted with "Carol Of The Bells", always a favorite during the holidays.

(smile!)
Before we left there, everyone joined in to make a wish for Mama.

Every person received a candle, with each taper being lit by one of the young singers.

Then, we all sang "Silent Night", a song I know Mama knew by heart, as many years as she was part of a choir!

At the song's end, each person closed their eyes and blew out the flame as they made their wish.

How wonderful that was!

(smile!)

And you know what came next, right?

Cake!

Not just any cake, either, but a great and glorious Christmas cake like Frank always made, chock full of fruit and pecans!

That was a gift to me from Mark Kameron last Friday, right in time to share with Mama.

Delicious!

(smile!)
What's that you say?

Where's the ice cream?

Here it is, half-price courtesy of Publix, to celebrate my half-birthday.

I chose the Mint Chocolate Chip, knowing that Mama always liked that one, too, at this holiday - and her birthday! - time of year.

So creamy and cool, it is, leaving your mouth with a tingle to brighten a cold day!

Today was lovely and warm, in the low 70's: perfect.

(smile!)
All very nice!

Now, it was time for gifts!

Publix again came to my rescue, gifting me with this Salsa Bouquet to mark my 4th anniversary in their loyalty club.

Don't the flowers frame Mama so well?

And now I'm, settled in to watch "The Polar Express" with her, with Comcast gifting me this movie yesterday as a reward.

Perfect!
i thank You, God, for this day, and for giving me this woman as my mother!

ballet and hotdog hotrods!

"Hotdog hotrods? Like, race cars shaped like hotdogs, like the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile?"

LOL! No, these were paper models of classic cars that served as the serving dishes for the kids meals at Hwy 55. Chloe kept hers, but Miyah let me take her paper toy home. There is even a sheet of decals that I can apply to personalize it!

"Oh, wow, that looks really cool! So, you were in Hinesville to have dinner with your first niece and her girls?"

Yes, and no. We did dine together, but that was after the dance recital at Liberty County Performing Arts Center. I just love the name of the group: Life Moves Dance Studio

"Very nice name!"

Right? Christina had mentioned the show to me on Thursday night, though she called it "Scrooged" by mistake. The actual title was "Scrooge" and it had elements of "A Christmas Carol" at its core, but also music and dances from "The Nutcracker" as well as the story of the birth of Jesus.

"That sounds like a bit of a mishmash to me."

Actually, it was beautifully choreographed, with a beautiful story and excellent music, all beautifully performed. That's what I wrote on their event page just a few minutes ago.

"And this scene is with Scrooge and Jacob Marley?"

It is! And that's Brian Rich playing the title character! He's with the Richmond Hill Community Theatre! He was fabulous in this nonverbal, nondancing role. The dancers are the Ghost of Christmas Present (two-toned dress), the Ghost of Christmas Past (in white), and the Ghost of Christmas Future (in black). Absolutely fortuitous that all three spirits happened to be in this shot!

"So that was one of your point-and-click photos?"

You got it!

"Well done! And I see in the program that others from RHCT were in this, too. Eddie Hodge played 'Marley', Elijah Winchester was 'Tiny Tim', and his dad, Greyson Winchester, was 'Joseph' in the nativity scene."

Yes, I saw that, too. I didn't even realize that was Brian Rich until I was able to read the program here at home. If I had known, I might have gone up and said hi to him. As it was, we were all hungry, and the two little blondes had lost track of the story after intermission, so we skedaddled.

"I see. And you didn't spend the night?"

I had packed my butterfly tote with my meds, as well as a nightgown, then left it on the couch. I didn't even realize I'd done so until I pulled up at Christina's and went to grab the bag... and it wasn't on the car seat. I knew I had a bag in my hand when I went out, but it was the trash bag.

"Maybe next time, dear. And how cute the girls look in their matching outfits!"

Yes, they do, and they insisted on posing with Lucy and Mousse. Yes, that's d-o-g-s, plural. That's a topic for another post, not this one.

"Heard. Well, I'm glad y'all had such a nice evening together as the girls went to their first dance performance! Maybe they should have been read "A Christmas Carol" so they would have had a clue what was going on."

Good suggestion. I'll make sure of that before we have another show! Now, I've used my Comcast reward to watch "Scrooged", the 1988 movie with Bill Murray, and I'd forgotten how much fun it was, with its cavalcade of stars! Like Carol Kane as the zany Ghost of Christmas Present - what a hoot and half!

Christmas came early for me!

That's because Christina Ann came and spent the day with me!
Just her... the girls were with their Grammy.
Woohoo!!!
What did we do?
Whatever we wanted to!!!
Specifically, we went to a free movie and dined out for dinner!
What a rare treat for both of us to have time together that isn't interrupted by the need for "Miyah, stop that" or "Chloe, leave that alone" or such utterances.
What a relief to not have to do that!
Of course I love my great-nieces, and of course she loves her two daughters, but it's good to be able to behave like adult women every so often, n'est-ce pas?
To be able to have real grownup talk with no little ears to hear -
thank you, Melinda!
(smile!)
So, another movie, just three days after the last one - incredible!
This time was different, though, as it was just we two.
And what did we watch?
"Wicked, Part 1".
We both grew up watching "The Wizard Of Oz", thanks to my Mama, her Grammy.
That means both of us had some trepidation about this new take.
However, I happened to catch the TV special, "Defying Gravity", last week, and that had convinced me to see the new musical the first time.
Since then, I read an article about Gregory Maguire, the author of the book on which "Wicked, Part 1" is based.
That has driven me to see the it - or, rather, parts of it - several times since then.

Now, I had the opportunity to share that new perspective on our beloved land of Oz with my first niece... and to do so for free, thanks to a Comcast reward of two free tickets!
Thanks, Fandango, for helping to broker that deal for us.
And guess what?
She and I sang along with parts of the movie!
And, because we were at the screening with subtitles, I was able to understand some of the lyrics in 'Galinda's' songs, when Ariana's voice gets a bit too high for me.
What a nice bonus that was!

Then we went to dinner at Red Lobster, a place I like and that she hasn't been to for several years, and they had beaucoup shrimp dishes to try!
We both had the '3 for $20' deal.
I got the Scampi, the grilled, and Walt's favorite.
She had the Scampi, the Dragon, and the Parrot Isle Coconut.
We both ate every bite, too, as we sat and talked for two hours.
I mean talked, too, without phones or kids or craziness from others.
(smile!)
As I told her mom when she called as Christina was dropping me off at home, I regarded this as my Christmas present, come early!
She completely understood.
(smile!)

holding hands film festival

It all started with this image.
I'd signed up on AARP Theatre to watch "Broadway & Beyond with Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley", filmed at a NYC club on 1 June 2017.
It was the word "Broadway" that caught me, as I knew nothing about either of them.
But, as I watched the film clip a few weeks ago, I noticed something that was different about their duet: they were holding hands.
In fact, they had been in contact during the entire song, but this was when I saw the held hands.
Wow.
And when I watched the entire film tonight, I was again struck with their near-constant contact, but this time I knew two things about them.
1) This show was filmed on their 20th wedding anniversary and celebrated their first touch as Dido and Aeneus in the Puccini opera.
It had not mattered that she was 36 and he was 25.
2) She had died within a year after this performance at Feinstein's 54 Below.
The ovarian cancer had returned, possibly before this show.
No wonder the songs were ones they'd sung before, meaningful lyrics with an extra dollop of poignancy at this time in their lives.
I couldn't help but draw a parallel from them to JinHi and Mark.
Her omnipresent cancers - plural - have given them many scares in their 24 years of marriage, but they are still holding tightly to each other's hands.
Wow.

Then it occurred to me that I've actually seen a lot of hand-holding recently.
Why not make this post a celebration of that emblem of love and trust?
So, the film of Marin and Jason stands as the first entry, though it was not the first seen.
That honor belongs to "Warm Bodies", watched last week on Peacock.
It's in the "my stuff" folder, too, so I can see it again whenever I like.
I really love this zombie movie!
R shows Julie what a sensitive guy he is by playing appropriately-themed cuts on the albums he's collected.
No doubt that led to the me watching "Ennchanted" as my $1 Reward from Comcast a few evenings later.
Here, Ella and Prince Edward enter the ball holding hands, but her heart no longer belongs to him.
No, a couple of days in the real world has led her to Robert (and his darling little daughter).
Yes, even though it had been Edward who sang to, and with, her in the imaginary land of Andalasia!
It's so very important that a couple should be able to sing love - or play - love songs to each other to let each know know how they feel!
Such an interesting point, that is.
Language is important, and precise word choice more so.
How better than in song to express deepest feelings to a loved one?
This afternoon I saw the third film with hand holders.
Yes, the couple in this photo are my ever-helpful Sally with her beloved scientist, Jack, in "The Nightmare Before Christmas".
How glad I was that AMC gifted me with that for my dance card!
And I'm glad I was able to include this movie in this film festival.

rockwell reception!

I know, that sounds like a party for the Flintstones!
Didn't Fred's boss have that surname?
Hahahaha!
Wrong Rockwell!
This little gathering was at the Jepson.
It seems like forever since I was at one of these!
Such classy little hors-d’œuvre we had, too!
That's butterbean hummus flatbread topped with ginger shrimp in the foreground.
The ball is mushroom risotto drizzled in butterscotch - that was definitely dessert!
Plus, there were mini-tacos of mojo pork - yum!
My thanks to the Wildflower Cafe for the catered affair... such a delicious tapas dinner!
Thanks to Vicki, too, as my dining companion there.
She volunteers at the SKIO aquarium!
(smile!)
That little feast, with me savoring at least three rounds of each nosh, served me well for the discussion ahead!
The museum has a new exhibit, "Norman Rockwell And Peers: Illustrating Childhood", with an informal Q&A between Erin at the Jepson and Judy Goffman Cutler, the woman who first drew interest to the original artwork done by illustrators of the first half of the 20th century.
Of those, Norman Rockwell is certainly the one I know best, remembering his covers on various magazines from my youth, as well as reprinted on calendars I've owned over the years.
That's Judy on the right, in pink, and she was so very informative about the history of Rockwell and other American Illustrators.
I guess so: she runs a museum in Rhode Island about what is left of their art.
Of the hundreds of magazine covers that Rockwell's art adorned, very few of his original paintings exist.
Those paintings were essentially regarded as drafts by the printing industry, and, once the image was set for the issue to be printed, there was no need to keep the painting.
Can you imagine???
However, that's the way it was.
Illustrators were not regarded as artists back then.
The only paintings that survived were ones that Rockwell, or other illustrators, kept for themselves or gave to friends.
Mind-boggling, isn't it?
I very much look forward to perusing the 20 canvases of his - as well as those of Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker, Ethel Franklin Betts, Jessie Willcox Smith, and N.C. Wyeth - on some other occasion, but I needed to rescue my car.
See, I had parked in a space that I knew wasn't valid, but I did it anyway.
I figured that if I got a ticket, I'd let that be my "local citizen" freebie from Savannah Parking Services for the year.
But guess what?
No ticket!
i thank You, God!
(smile!)

Now, I'm going to enjoy a free musical!
Comcast has rewarded me with my monthly $1 Movie Night, which I'm spending on 2007's "Enchanted", with the fabulous singing of Amy Adams and James Marsden!
Seriously, who knew he could sing as well as play Sonic's adoptive dad?
(smile!)

2 hours, 18 minutes

"What's up with that funky title?"

That's the thing that all my A*List movies had in common. Each member of this week's trio had that same running time.

"That seems rather odd. No, wait a minute! Two of those movies were the same!"

That's correct! I watched "Joker: Folie a Deux" twice. I very nearly watched it two days in a row, back to back, but I took a day off to watch "Joker", as I haven't seen it since it came out in 2019. That's five years ago between that first one with Joaquin Phoenix and this second one. So, I'm glad I did took the time to watch it again! Comcast gave it to me as a reward this week, so I took that coincidence as a sign for me to do a bit of research.

"Sounds like an interesting venture..."

Yes, it was. I had forgotten about this line 'Arthur Fleck' wrote in his journal. "The worst part about having a mental illness is... people expect you to behave as if you DON'T." That's the key to both of the movies. Well, that and the falsehood his mom told him so he wouldn't kill himself when he was younger.

"Yeah, that thing about 'he was born to bring people joy and make them laugh', is that what you mean?"

Absolutely. That's why he got a job as a clown. That's why he made up bad jokes and wrote them in his journal. That's why he wanted to be a stand-up comedian. He had been told for as long as he could remember that his special purpose was to make folks laugh. He just misunderstood. The people were laughing at him, as a person, not at his jokes or antics.

"Oh, that's so horrible and so sad!"

Right? And there was a series of unfortunate events that led him to prison. First, Arthur was getting beat up by young bullies for doing his clown job. Second, Gotham was having a war of the classes, with Tom Wayne - you know, the future Batman's mega-rich father - leading the struggle of the wealthy against the working class. Third, one of Arthur's fellow clowns gave him a gun for protection, even though they both knew their boss didn't allow weapons. So, the stage was set.

"Indeed. He was already taking 7 different medications, but those weren't helping. Than the social program that supplied him with a therapist was discontinued, so he didn't have that outlet anymore. Then he got fired for using the gun as a prop in his comic routine. Yes, life was not working in his favor."

Correct. So, when he was riding the subway home, he witnessed those three well-dressed young men bullying and harassing the young woman. His manic laughter after the woman left brought him to their attention, which led to them beating him up. Plus, they stole part of his costume. Arthur brought out the gun to even the odds... and lost control after pulling the trigger the first time. Perhaps it was shock that kept him shooting at them, shock that drove him to chase down the one that was getting away.

"Yes, that happens with people who are unfamiliar with guns. That's the danger."

Enter the media, reporting on the incident. Tom Wayne made out the three bullies as fine, upstanding, members of society with prestigious college degrees. The news revolved around "a clown" seen fleeing the scene. And, justthatfast, others embraced the clown makeup as a symbol of revolt, much as rebels had gladly donned Guy Fawkes masks. It didn't matter that the three bullies had been killed for being bullies, not because they were well to do. The misunderstanding was now etched into the mindset by the media.

"That's true. But Arthur Fleck believed that the crowds of people donning clown makeup or masks were in support of him for standing up to the bullies. He took that as a sign of him finally being accepted - no, lauded - by others. That gave him the confidence to try out his stand-up comic routine... and that brought him to the attention of a TV snark host, Murray. Then, watching Murray's TV show one night with his mom, Arthur was first thrilled to see that host running footage of him at the club, but them Arthur was appalled to realize the host was making fun of his act.

"Yikes! That's right. That host was someone his mom adored. What a cringe moment for poor Arthur to have the man making him out to be a fool!"

Indeed. Then, Murray invited Arthur to come onto his TV show. And Arthur did, making sure to rehearse his entrance and rehearse what he was going to say. Had he planned to kill Murray, or did that just happen? Well, here's my take on that: you don't bring along a loaded gun if you're not planning to use it. It's just that simple. Perhaps Arthur didn't know it still had bullets, perhaps he did. In any case, he brought it with him, even practicing how he would pull it out.

"Very true. Then, he put on the clown makeup, too."

Well, he did that because Murray had referred to him as "a joker" when Murray was maligning Arthur's stand-up act. Arthur had believed his 'fans' would enjoy seeing him in that makeup on the TV show, so he'd carefully put it on before his entrance. He had artfully crafted that character specifically for Murray's show. I think Arthur was a little disappointed when he had to remind the snarky host of the origin of that 'joker' character.

"You know, that reminds me of that 'mercial where the woman's antidepressant meds aren't working, so she uses a hand sign with a fake smiling face to mask her sadness."

Exactly. Arthur was a clown because he could literally "put on a happy face" with that greasepaint, even though he was always quite unhappy. Being "a joker" was his bid for acceptance by others and his bid for fame on TV.

"Mental illness is certainly a tough topic."

That it is, and it's dealt with throughout "Joker: Folie a Deux", both his and that of others. For instance, Harley is portrayed as a celebrity groupie who sees the fame surrounding Arthur Fleck as her means to also get into the limelight. Her lack of self-esteem is reflected in the lyrics she sings. "If My Friends Could See Me Now" is her tune as she enters the courtroom where all know she is Arthur's love.  "There's a light, a certain kind of light, that never shone on me", she sings, as part of a duet of "To Love Somebody" on the "Harley & Joker" fantasy show. Then she says "I've Got The World On A String" as she becomes the media darling after convincing Arthur to fire his lawyer and defend himself.

"So this really is a musical?"

Yes, a musical about mental illness. Sometimes it's obvious that the song and dance routines are simply in the mind of the singer, but sometimes it's left for us to decide. For instance, are Harley's songs for real, or do they exist only in Arthur's mind? I know I speak often of my mental jukebox, but I don't mount a dance when a song gets cued up. For Arthur, the fantasy is everything. Everything. he doesn't even get that Harley's a celebrity groupie when she insists on putting the "joker" character makeup on him before they have sex in his cell. He goes along with her fantasy, not realizing she is part of the problem. She thinks "The Joker" is who he really is, not just something he created. In fact, his lawyer didn't get that, either. Her entire defense rested on "The Joker" being a split from his personality, a manifestation of his mental illness. He went along with that since the lawyer was convinced it would get his case a judgement of "not guilty by mental defect". That would mean he and Harley would be able to be together again.

"Wow. So, this was more akin to the darkness in Sweeney Todd than to The Joker as played by Jack Nicholson, right?"

Yeah, you could say that. I know I've very much enjoyed using my AMC A*List to see this musical twice. Who knows? I may see it again next week.

"What about the Coppola film?"

Film my ass. What "Megalopolis" clearly showed is that Francis Ford Coppola, at 95 years old, has lost his touch. There was a good science fiction story buried deep within all that hot mess - like, way down deep - but you had to wade through schlock to put it together. Here's how I knew it was no good: the physicist didn't want to discuss it afterward. He was the one who had been so hot to see it!

"Yikes. That's pretty brutal if the bfe didn't want to talk about it after making such a fuss for weeks about seeing it."

Yes. Such a waste of a talented cast. Perhaps he should take a lesson from the 66-year-old Viggo Mortensen. His Western, "The Dead Don't Hurt", was incredible... and he even wrote the score and starred in it, not just wrote, directed, and produced as Coppola did. Maybe I can find that movie on Peacock to watch sometime... but, now, I'm going to enjoy the look and sound of "Warm Bodies"! That's still my favorite zombie movie. (smile!)

flashback to 1920's chicago, plus

Even when the days are full of televised football, there is still something worth watching.
Last night, Comet gave me the one episode of "The X-Files" that was almost a musical.
For real!
Not only was "Improbable" filled with songs that Mark Snow had nothing to do with, and that made it a quite unusual show, but there were also dance numbers!

For starters, there were seven Italian songs from the 1950's or earlier and one English song written in 1936 by two American black artists.
Why had those songs been chosen?
Did Burt Reynolds suggest those tunes from his youth?
After all, having been born in 1936 - the same year as my Daddy, Harvey Goodwin Smith - and growing up in southern Florida, near Miami, Burt would have been in his teens and 20's when he heard much of that music.
No doubt it's as familiar to him as Jim Croce is to me.
Then again, it may just be that Chris Carter is a fan of the French singer, Karl Zéro, and wanted to include his latest album - "Songs for Cabriolets and Otros Tipos de Vehiculos" - full of bossa nova tunes in that 2002 episode of "The X-Files".
After all, he is the writer/director/producer, so he has that option.
(smile!)
All I can say is, that's one of my favorite non-Mulder episodes!
I came into it straight out of seeing "Chicago", the musical I chose as my $1 Movie Night reward from Comcast for the month.
"Improbable" was set in Baltimore, but sure had a "back in the day" feel to it, so that was actually a good segue for me.
Then, I watched "Chicago" again with my breakfast.
Perfect!

A little bit of burlesque...
as the lawyer "rode" to the prison in his makeshift Ford Phaeton!
That reminds me of the "Crazy Horse Paris" show I saw in Las Vegas in 2010 - ooh la la!

A little bit of ventriloquism and puppetry...
as the lawyer puts words into his client's mouth, while also orchestrating the spin that all the media folk will put on the "little jazz killer's" murder story.

A little bit of softshoe comedy, and a little bit of tap...
the first as performed by the ignored husband of the murdering blonde, the second done with much "Razzle Dazzle" by the lawyer in the courtroom.
Oh, yes, this one hits all the high notes of vaudeville!
Come to think of it, so did "Sherman And The Mint Juleps", didn't it?
Yes, yes, indeed.
Time to watch that again... and perhaps invite the physicist.
He's always up for vaudeville and burlesque!

dawn and sandy and political shenanigans

I had meant to take a photo of my luncheon, but I was busy listening to Dawn.

That's why I have this photo of the elite dancing in the rain on the beach.

Every time I see it at The King & I, I wonder what music they heard there.

Perhaps the servants were humming their favorite song?

(smile!

Afterward, went to "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" at the cinema, to see it in Big D.

Such a humorous flick it was, too, being most careful to step into those old shoes and walk the path left back in 1988 for it.

So glad it had Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara keeping the pace!

Then I popped over to Savannah VA to speak in person with my PCP.

We have yet to catch each other about the thyroid ultrasound and I have questions!

I now have a phone appointment with her on Friday.

I also tried to speak with the optometrist, Dr. Urban, about my left eye.

As I told the nurse, I am wondering if a bacterial infection from water droplets that got into that eye when I was working in the yard in the spring might be the culprit for the decreased vision I now have in my good eye.

Part of the reason I wonder such a thing is due to Ian, the blind student I had, the one that led me to create my tactile periodic table.

His blindness had resulted from swimming in a dirty pond when he was 12 years old.

By the time I was done with those errands and one at the bank, it was time to meet up with Sandy for a movie!

I'm so glad I'd thought to contact her about "Reagan".

She is very much into politics and I knew she'd be interested in that hagiography.

How about that fancy new word, eh?

A hagiography is a biography of a saint, and clearly the Lifeguard was regarded as such, even though the tale was told through the perspective of a Russian spy.

That was smart: place the emphasis on Reagan's desire to end Communism, to make it the focal point of the movie.

She and I both liked it and popped over to B & D Burgers for dinner to keep talking.

And guess what I had?

An updated cheeseburger!

Actually, it was two of them, called Steakhouse Sliders.

I highly recommend them!

I highly recommend those movies, too, as well as the third on my not-quite-completed AMC A*List dance card.

I already made my reservation for yet another viewing of "Deadpool & Wolverine".

That will be seen tomorrow.

I do know this: every time I watch it, I want to see "Deadpool" again.

That just may be what I see with my next Comcast $1 Movie Night reward.

But, not tonight.

Am I planning to watch the Presidential Debate between the Prosecutor and the Ex-Pres?

Interestingly, I started doing so, but lost interest.

LOL!

That didn't start out being a joke, but it just happened that way.

Seriously!

And, as much as I'd liked to watch the Blond Man get thrashed, I'd rather see the new movie that Comcast has given to me: "The Blind Side".

Positive messages, lots of Sandra Bullock, and football - yes, much better!

(smile!)
