happy birthday, alan ruck

Alan Ruck had his 63rd birthday today.
You would think I would have that on my calendar.
You know, being that he and I have a history together.
Oh, have I somehow not shared our story here, on this beach?
We met at Dragon*Con 2009.
I had attended with my BFF and her family, primarily in memory of Sam Johnson.
We were in line for a panel with various actors who'd been featured in "Star Trek" movies or television shows.
The line-up was amazing: Louise Fletcher (as the conniving Vedek/Kai Winn on 14 episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"); Malcolm McDowell (the remarkable mad scientist, Dr. Soran, in "Star Trek: Generations"); Alan Ruck (the hapless Captain Harriman, in command of an incomplete starcraft, also in "Star Trek: Generations"); plus a couple of others whose names have escaped me.
As I said, we were standing in the hall, waiting for admittance.
Suddenly, my BFF nods to the left and says "Isn't that Cameron over there?"
I look, and freeze.
Coming up the stairs and headed directly toward us, there he was!
Somehow, as he neared, I stepped toward him, right hand outstretched for a handshake, and I asked, "Aren't you Alan Ruck?"
Taking my hand in his, firmly but softly, he had replied, "I am. What is your name?"
He kept walking, so I was twirled during this conversation, as if we were dancing...
and I had managed to say, "Faustina"...
"What a beautiful name," he told me...
then he loosed my hand and continued on to the door of the panel room.
Wow.
I was left stunned by the encounter.
The man had said my name was beautiful.
Wow.

The panel was a hoot and a half!
He and Malcolm managed to sit beside each other and they were cutting up the entire time, like a couple of mischievous school boys!
It was as if they were best friends who had not seen each other in far too long and were now making up for lost time!
Perhaps they were...
they had been on the same movie together...
so, perhaps they were.
Maybe I'll ask Alan Ruck about that on our next encounter.

coffee with alan ruck!

Yes, there's coffee in that mug!

For the second day in a row, I had coffee with breakfast, and today I had a little "Psych", too, to go along with the physicist!

After all, the bfe gave me those dvd's, right?

And today's episode had Gus walking into a bank - the very one Alan Ruck was robbing!

Yes - that same Alan Ruck who told me my name was beautiful as he held my hand at Dragon*Con!

And yes, those are blueberries on top of the peanut butter, and they're better than jelly!

(smile!)

This was yesterday's breakfast: a three-egg whites omelet with cheddar, on a high-fiber English muffin.

I've started a new food plan, the Whole Body Reset, that focuses on tracking protein and fiber, that was specifically designed for those over 60 years old.

A change is definitely needed and now is the time!

And what's in the "beach time" mug that my first niece gave me?

Coffee, glorious coffee!

No matter that it's decaf; I have so missed its taste and aroma, absent from my life since February.

I deliberately chose Christina's cup, as she's been fairly absent from my life this year, too.

Maybe this will spur more interaction with her, as well as with this breakfast elixir!

With that in mind, I'm going to select coffee mugs with the faces of those I love, faces I have seen too seldom during the pandemic.

Tomorrow, coffee will be with Smitty and Mary, to honor their 21st wedding anniversary.

What about Friday's mug?

Well, I'll have to go through the cupboard and get them line up, won't I?

I'll do that tonight.

Right now, it's time to get in some exercise - I mean, go grocery shop!

rutger and alan

I think I've figured out the source of my latest sweet dreams.
Rather, I should say the sources.

As this blog reflects, I've attended quite a few baseball games this month.
In fact, since the 25th of June, I have had thirteen days of baseball.
Two of those dates were for the CPL All-Stars, one was for an exhibition game, but the other ten were regularly-scheduled bouts between the Savannah Bananas and other teams of the Coastal Plains League.
What did they have in common?
At each and every one of those games, at least once during the proceedings, when an opposing team's batter was in the box, the bit from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" would be played in Grayson Stadium.
In the scene, Ferris has just caught a baseball hit way up, into the stands where they're sitting at Wrigley Field.
For the next man at bat, Cameron starts chanting to rattle him.
"Hey, batter batter,
swing,
batter.
He cannot,
he cannot,
he cannot,
he cannot,
he cannot,
swing,
batter.
"
Nice bit, right?
That 1986 movie has been a favorite since I was 28 years old.
That movie was also my introduction to Alan Ruck, though I would not realize how enamored I am of him until years later, at the 2009 Dragon*Con.
Now, every time I hear this chant, I immediately think of the scene in the movie...
and of Alan Ruck holding my hand and saying my name was beautiful.
(smile)

So, I think maybe that blue-eyed man is partly behind my recent dreams.
Rutger Hauer is the other one.

I have been in love with him ever since 1985.
That's when I first noticed him, as the gallant knight cursed by an evil and lecherous bishop.
I was the same age as Michelle Pfeiffer, the "Ladyhawke" by day to his wolf-man at night.
The two lovers were only able to catch glimpses of each other at dawn and at dusk, as they were transforming into their altered forms.
So very romantic!
I very much enjoyed him in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", too, several years later. Very nice sense of humor, he had, one just glimpsed in the medieval love story.
Now, Rutger Hauer has died.
Jim broke the news to me on Wednesday, by way of announcing the special screening in his honor.
Even though I know the man was 75, my mental image still has him astride that steed.
I think he would have liked knowing that.

proof of life, with coffee on the porch

"Please tell me you didn't give the dog a caffeinated beverage.

Of course I didn't! I don't even give me caffeine these days. That's decaf in that coffee mug.

"Oh, I see. You're having breakfast out on the front porch, much like you usually do on the balcony of whatever beach resort you're at for your holidays."

Exactly right! I was inspired to do so by something Laura had told me before they left. If you say "coffee on the porch" to the dog, he knows he's going to be out there for company. He was very happy about that!

"I'm sure he was. Anything that reminds him of routines with her and Tony is sure to make him happy."

That's right. My night routines are very different from theirs, as they tend to have lights out by 10 PM and I'm up until midnight or so. Dane has certainly let me know he is unhappy about that change, but, that's for his benefit. He likes to go out about 5 AM to pee, and I'm certainly not coming from my house to let him do that. This way, I can let him out when I awaken to pee, then go right back to sleep.

"I guess he likes having you handy for that."

I'm sure he does.

"So, what are you looking at?"

It's the oak tree I planted about 25 years ago. That was when Jeff and I were living at this house, which once was Mama's. The oak by the driveway had died many years before, so I had transplanted one from the back yard. It's truly grown into a lovely tree.

"It certainly has."

The marching band is providing a musical backdrop for my breakfast. It's been nice to listen to them, though I had not realized they would be returning to HVJ so soon. It isn't even August!

"Well, remember, Christina had to return to school this week, too, to get in practice before the kids for Head Start pour in next week."

Time has such a way of seemingly going faster, doesn't it? But it's all in one's perspective. I know the university will be starting up soon, too. I'll ask the bfe when I see him later.

"As in later today? About time y'all had plans again!"

That's pretty much what he said! We're going off to the Royal Cinema for "Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris", which looks to be divinely funny! Then we'll have dinner out there before coming back. I plan on a quick visit with Dane before the physicist picks me up. I've already given the dog some food, as well as put out dry food for Frosty the cat, so both of the animals should be fine until I return.

"I foresee the dog being a bit miffed with the change in schedule..."

Oh, pish posh! It's Tuesday and he's accustomed to his owners going off for a movie on Tuesday nights, so this won't be much different from that.

"Hey, it's Tina Tuesday! And you're going out for dinner and a movie! Very nice!"

I totally agree! And guess what I got from Comcast for their last movie reward? "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"!!! Alan Ruck to look at however often I want! Woohoo!

"Hahahaha! Once upon a time, it would have been Matthew Broderick's name you chanted."

Yeah, well, once upon a time, Alan Ruck held my hand and told me my name was beautiful. So, his is the name that I ballyhoo!

"Yes, dear!"

Indeed. Now, I bid you farewell, g'friend. If I'm to visit the dog, I must do so now!

"Later, 'tater! Have fun tonight!"

surprise! it's alan ruck!

Truly it was!

I had taken advantage of the $1 Weekend Movie Night reward from Comcast to watch yet another VHS movie from my collection.

This time, my choice was one I didn't quite remember.

From 1989, "Bloodhounds Of Broadway" had a huge cast of memorable actors, but I'd forgotten the plot.

That's okay, as it turned out to not have one.

The ensemble cast was enacting four different short stories, all woven together for a New Year's Eve celebration of 1928.

I'd first watched it last night, after my return from the Jenkins' BYOP, then again this morning.

Was it because of Rutger Hauer? Madonna? Jennifer Grey?

Nope, though I do enjoy all three of them.

Was it because of Randy Quaid or Fisher Stevens or Esai Morales?

Nope, though I thought they were all quite funny.

Matt Dillon? Steve Buscemi? Julie Hagerty?

Nope, nope, and nope.

It was because of Alan Ruck.

You know... the man who told me my name was beautiful.

(smile!)

Of course, he wasn't on my radar back then for that.

It wouldn't be until twenty years later that he would speak those words to me.

For this movie, his name wasn't in the opening credits.

That's why it was a pleasant surprise when he popped up, in a scene with Rutger Hauer.

Very nice!

Then he and his two bloodhounds, Nip and Tuck - remember that TV show? - keep showing up, helping the cops solve a murder.

Very nice!

He was 35 back then.

He's 67 now, still two years older than me.

I wonder if he still goes to Dragon*Con?

the trick to good gravy is...

I've been treated to several Bravo Top Chef events since began using Xfinity Rewards, but, I must say, this one was exceptional!

It isn't simply because the Minneapolis-based chef tonight,
Justin Sutherland, was entertaining...
although he certainly was....
from the smiley-face cap (see happy.com)...
to the unique apron (missed that site for customized wearable art)...
and the at-peace-with-the-world man in between,
calmly working with the food as if he were among friends,
keeping up a delightful patter as he did so.

It isn't because the recipe he selected -
Turkey Roll with bourbon-cornbread stuffing -
didn't turn out to be a work of art...
although it certainly was.
I swear, when he cut the baked treat into two pieces,
there were gasps all over the ZOOM world!
Just look at that gorgeous swirl!
Smell-vision can't come soon enough to computers and television.
Just imagine being able to waft those scents around the house!

Mostly, I found this one to be especially fun because of the host, Jamie Miles.
Not only is he adept as a moderator, keeping up with the chatter in the chat box as it emerged, but he also kept the chef engaged with the audience by peppering his side of conversation with interesting queries.
I especially appreciated that after the lack of a moderator for the Pandora "After Party".
But, here's where Jamie excelled: there were more than 80 people in this audience, most of whom said naught, but he was quick to splice our comments and questions into his own.
And when I posted this question, he announced it with grand fanfare...
well, so it seemed to me, as it was my name he called out...
saying it was from a "long-time Xfinity Rewards Member, Faustina"...
almost as good as Alan Ruck saying my name was beautiful.
Almost... but Alan had been holding my hand when he said that!
(smile!)

I'd asked, "Any gravy tips? I've never been able to quite pull it off."
And I tell you, Justin seemed to hit pause in his puttering in the kitchen to bring his focus into answering my question!
I also found him looking at me the entire time he was doing so, too.
Very nice!
I learned the importance of having equal parts of flour and fat - with no regard to that being butter, lard, or pan drippings.
Then it has to be brought to a simmer...
and kept there for a little while...
to get rid of the flour taste.
How 'bout that?
Yes, this was definitely a fun experience!
Thanks, y'all!!!

mgm+ film festival

At least a week before the end of the Showtime reward, Comcast offered me another month of free viewings on another premium channel, MGM+.
I waited until after that film festival was done before I opened up that gift.
After all, it was best as a bday65 treat, given the timing... right?
So, I'm regarding this as the MGM+ Birthday Film Festival.
That would be "Movies Galore, Magic Too" Birthday Film Festival!
Yes, I do love acronyms!
(smile!)

This premium channel certainly had much more choice in it.
The movies offered ran the gamut of 1930's to the present, plus listed the films in different genres, which, even though not always correct, certainly was helpful.
My friend Barbara had missed that categorization, so she spent a lot of time scrolling through the 2000-plus titles in search of those she knew.
Not me.
I love an adventure, and a movie never even heard of, like a book never before read, offers a story that's sure to capture my attention and maybe even my heart.
(smile!)

These photographs are from the last movie I viewed, a bit of lagniappe today, when I had thought the reward was over.
Here is a quote from it.
"You can dance anywhere
even if only in your heart.
Most definitely meant for me in this Summer of Magic!
I do hope some of these may even entice others to try the unknown.
So, here we go!
(smile!)

"The Wrong Todd" (2018) This was low budget, but really good science fiction that reminded me of that time-travel romance Czech film I so love.

"Rough Riders' Round-Up" (1939) Roy Rogers in this western with the proliferation of "r" in the title! He even gets to sing twice, but not a musical, with him just busting out in song.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031880/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_4_tt_8_nm_0_q_Rough%2520Riders%2520

"The Space Between" (2021) What a sleeper! Kelsey Grammer as a former rock star who hides out after his wife dies... until found by his label, who wants to be released from his contract. Did all his own singing!!!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8740898/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520space%2520bet

"Juliet, Naked" (2018) This time, it's Ethan Hawke singing as a once-famous artist, and the woman on his arm has a boyfriend who is obsessed with his music.

"Lord Love A Duck" (1966) LOL! Roddy McDowell as the high school nerd, enraptured with the new student, Tuesday Weld, and traying to make sure he makes all her wishes come true... LOL! After the outing with 4 little blondes in search of mermaid ducks. (And when I told Sandy about it, she said she had a Tuesday Weld barbie doll when she was growing up!)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060636/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_q_lord%2520love%2520a%2520d

"A Birder's Guide To Everything" (2013) A nice tale of coming of age after the death of his mom, following in her footsteps, and trying to track down a once-extinct type of duck he thought he saw. Ben Kingsley as the duck expert.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1582465/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_a%2520birder

"The Road To Edmund" (2018) A youth minister finds himself forced by the church to take leave... and meets an odd man who turns out to have the advice he needed from God.

"My Cousin Vinny" (1992) Such a sweet, sassy Marisa Tomei as the car-smart girlfriend of Joe Pesci, in charge of his first trial case, with Fred Gwynne as the judge. Had forgotten just how funny this was!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104952/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_my%2520cousin

"Christmas Crime Story" (2016) Adrian Paul (my crush from "The Highlander" series!!!) is the only name I knew in this story told from multiple points of view. Very good, really, and the bfe has just discovered Adrian Paul!
Note: this was retitled "A Detour Fro Christmas".
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5813808/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

"Paper Man" (1971) For those wondering about science fiction from an IT side, this low-key horror story tells of what happens when a bunch of college kids run amok with a found credit card, then try to "create" a trail away from them. Very cool to see a young, long-haired, Dean Stockwell as the nerd trying to help.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067551/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_8_nm_0_q_paper%2520man

"Out Of Time" (2003) Ah, yes, when Denzel Washington was on the cusp of being 50, but still able to pull off being a Miami police chief in his prime, with Eva Mendes as his ex-wife, now a detective working a murder-arson case... in which he is implicated, if he can't keep a step ahead. Really love this movie!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313443/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_out%2520of%2520time

"Eleven Eleven" (2018) Silly but fun scifi, with an alien returning for the baby she gave up sixteen years earlier to the one-night stand she had on Earth with a guy who gives tours of supposed UFO sites. Silly, but fun!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3309874/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_1

"The Woman In Red" (1984) Gene Wilder as a man in a midlife crisis after seeing a woman let her dress blow up over an air grate in the parking garage. LOL! With his real wife Gilda Radner as an office worker who mistakenly thinks his amor is for her, not for the ad campaign model, Kelly LeBrock. Nice scenes at the end of him dancing! And Charles Grodin and Joseph Bologna are his buddies!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088414/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_4_nm_4_q_the%2520woman%2520in%2520r

"The Patty Duke Show: Still Rockin' In Brooklyn Heights" (1999) Originally aired as a TV movie, with her as a teacher trying to save the high school from the wrecking ball wielded by Cindy Williams' real estate hand. Rather funny!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0192445/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_2_tt_5_nm_3_q_the%2520patty%2520duke

"Ghost Town" (2008) I could totally see this as setting "Ghosts" in motion for me. Ricky Gervais is a dentist who gains the ability to see and hear ghosts, with them all clamoring for his help in resolving their problems. Nice to see Alan Ruck (!!!) as a ghost dad trying to help his son locate the toy his son associates with him, and Dana Ivey as a ghost mom trying to mend a rift between her daughters.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0995039/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_ghost%2520to

"2nd Date Sex" (2019) Ryan and Laura meet at a bar one night, both while waiting for their friends, and end up connecting mentally and have a grand night! So... how to parlay that start into something physical and getting screwed, without screwing it up? Pretty funny!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7439748/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_2nd%2520date

"Blacklight" (2022) Hooray! I had almost tried to drive to Pooler, just to see this Liam Neeson movie, but could not. So glad to get to see him kicking butt, this time against the government he works for, as citizens are being killed. I think this was the first time I saw his movies as being the same ilk as those of Steven Seagal... but I still love Liam.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14060094/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_7_nm_1_q_blackli

"Alice Of Wonderland In Paris" (1966) What a delight! A series of stories are told, some by Alice, some by Francois... some with Matiline!... as they travel and talk of cheese!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126189/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_7_nm_1_q_Alice%2520of%2520wonderland%2520i

"Fixed" (2017) One of three dads who do a sports podcast from a garage has a crisis: the two "v" words have risen in his life! Does he agree to getting a van? What about a vasectomy??? Alan Ruck is fabulous as his urologist!!!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4777004/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1_tt_8_nm_0_q_Fixed

"Kiss The Sky" (1998) First off, this has nothing to do with Jimi Hendrix. It's all about the midlife crisis of Gary Cole, with William Peterson tagging along as best friend to help him through it. They end up on at a lake high up on a mountain, with the goal to reach the island there, in search of their youth.
Actually pretty good... but I do have a crush on Peterson. I'm not sure Barbara even knew who he was. (She was here to watch movies with me!)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127629/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_kiss%2520the%2520sky

"Scramble" (2017) This was the second of our "new to us" double feature. It turned out to be one of my favorite genres: ordinary guy in an extraordinary, dangerous, and humorous situation! This time, the guy's girlfriend gets kidnapped by a pimp on the day of her father's funeral because the dad owed big money. Now, the guy has to get big money to get her back!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3652978/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3_tt_8_nm_0_q_Scramb

"Bound" (1996) How could I resist Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon in a crime caper? Exactly, especially with Joe Pantoliano as the mafia guy that Jennifer is tired of being a moll to. Enter Gina as a parolee who has moved in next door and taken a job as cleaner. Good and fast-paced!
Also, the last of a quartet of single-word titles for this film fest!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115736/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_Bound

"Secret Headquarters" (2022) Good for Owen Wilson for being the superhero Dad in this kid caper! His son thinks he's a slacker, as he's never home, but changes his mind when he finds out that aliens set up his dad as a champion of good.
Yep, definitely for the kid in me! Highly recommend!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14001894/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_secret%2520hea

"Soul Sessions" (2018) Nick has been freaked out ever since the plane he was to be on crashed with no survivors. He missed it due to a terrible traffic jam in ATL. His buddy suggests he see a therapist, and she starts him on a path through past lives to resolve his intimacy problems... and he finds out who the driver of the car was that caused him to miss that flight. Pretty good scifi.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5952522/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

"Another Time" (2018) Amazingly, another scifi from that year, part of a Thursday double header for me. This time, it's a money manager with a penchant for physics that meets the one woman for him... but the timing is wrong. So he seeks out the physicist he saw on TV in a special about time travel, to work with him to fix his timing problem. Lots of math referenced for that real touch.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3451984/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_another%2520time

"Sonic The Hedgehog 2" (2022) Hey, I had resisted seeing it, but it was Friday morning and my access to mgm+ was drawing to a close. Sonci! Tails! Jim Carrey! Locale in Hawaii! Perfect with brunch!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12412888/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_4_tt_5_nm_3_q_Sonic%2520

"The Foot Fist Way" (2006) Not as advertised, and I point to Will Ferrell's raunchy humor for its failure. The title is English for Tae Kwon Do, which is at the core of this one, but the studio owner is horrible to the kids he teaches and doesn't seem to practice what he's preaching. I kept hoping it would improve, but it did not.

"Giants Being Lonely" (2019) High school baseball team with a coach who is a total jerk to them. (Note: that was not meant as a companion piece to the above.) The coach's son gets ridden hard, while his friend, the team's star pitcher, is praised by all... including the coach's wife, who seduces him.
All comes to a head on prom night. This was supposed to be a comedy. Nope!

"I Will Make You Mine" (2020) Goh Nakamura is a singer with a past in the form of three women: Rachel, a heavy crush never even kissed, now unhappily wed to a cheater; Erika, his ex-wife and mother of their daughter, now dealing with her father's death; and Yea-Ming, a fellow musician that he had a fling with in Las Vegas, still single and maybe ready to settle down. Pretty good flick.

"Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985) I don't know whatever became of the actors in this one, as it was quite good. It follows the meeting of Holmes and Watson in high school, with them trying to solve a series of murders after a dear professor is killed.

"The Emperor's New CLothes" (1987) I kept returning to this old fairy tale in the listing, and I'm glad I finally clicked on it! Delightful musical with a 65-year-old Sid Caesar in the title role! Yes, he did sing! All the major characters had one song each, though some performed duets. Such a late-night treat on Saturday, good for sweet dreams!!

"Grosse Pointe Blank" (1997) So, if you're a hitman, how do you answer the question about your job at your high school ten-year reunion? John Cusack is adorable as always, even in this profession, especially as he tries to mend the relationship with his former high school sweetheart, who he had abandoned on prom night. Minnie Driver is lots of fun here! Good to see this again!

"Insight" (2021) Jian and his brother were clairvoyants, but drifted apart. Now, the brother is dead and Jian is in Los Angeles to solve his murder, even though the police are sure it was suicide. Good thing detective Abby is there to help!

"Seven Alone" (1974) Seems like I would have seen this western growing up, but I don't remember it. A true story of a 13-year-old boy who manages to get his six brothers and sisters safely to Oregon after their parents die on the trip and they lose their wagon and almost all else. Pretty amazing.

"Paradox Lost" (2020) One more scifi time travel to finish out my 30 days of free movies. This one has a guy visited by his grown son, from the future, sent to find him and warn him from changing anything in the timeline. Nice bit highlighting improv comedy that runs throughout the tale.

"Iris Warriors" (2022) Woohoo! An extra day of free today! Time for another family adventure! Set during WWII, it's the story told by the orphange mistress to the children during a blackout, as warplanes flew overhead. Light versus darkness, with magic and images of rainbow dancers fighting the shadows. Truly beautiful to watch during this summer of magic.

30th smf, day ten, 'nother noon

What an extra special treat I had at the CMC!
Not only did I find a penny right there at my parking space, but the artist brought his whole group up on stage with him!
Oh, yes he did!
I met Courtney Granger just before he went on stage and it was a bit like my Alan Ruck experience.
I said, "Oh! You're the man!"
Smiling, he put out his hand to shake mine, saying his name as I said mine.
Then I talked about growing up with country music, especially Hank Williams and Charlie Pride and Flat & Scruggs.
He's more into George Jones, launching into a stellar version of "White Lightning" that had me dancing and singing along at the back stage door!
I had forgotten I ever knew that one!
After a few more tunes, they blessed me with... a Hank Williams song! And not just any song, but one of the liveliest he ever did - "Jamabalaya"!!! I was snappin' my fingers and kickin' up my heels for sure, y'all!
I just know Courtney picked that one just for me!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
(smile!)
Such a fabulous preview of the Cajun dance party that that will go on here tonight!
The folks with the Savannah Music Festival are even making sure there will be a big dance floor, not the little 'private' dance hall I use. Nosirreebob! Those Pine Leaf Boys need everybody kicking up their heels!
I sure hope everyone will oblige them.
The Lucas has me this evening, so I'm glad I danced 'with' them this morning!

vroom, vroom at the movies!

This was the fourth, and final, "At The Movies" sermon at Compassion East and it was certainly a doozie!
Again, both of my brothers and "sisters" were there, but we sat in the row as alternating genders - you know, girl (Mary), boy (Smitty), girl (Laura), boy (Tony), girl (me).
That was my idea!
Guess I had science on my mind again!
(smile!)
The above photo is of Tony and Laura on their way back from the parking lot.
They'd gone out to the vehicle to put my pizza away.
And just what were they looking at?
Not 'what', but 'who'!
Smitty and Mary had arrived, having dined at home!
I'll be doing that, too, as I forgot my Lactaid again.
(smile!)
And just what was it that these two were looking at?
Cars, that's what!
Like this sporty blue baby, for one, with its wide white racing stripes running from the tip of the hood to bottom of the tail!
It looked a lot like one of the cars in the first part of the movie.
Then there was this one.
She was a bit boxy to be on a race oval, but that's okay.
Her 427 engine was the reason her owner had brought her today.
You see, that size was what was used back in the first racing days.
The hood was up so all could come and admire it, too.
That engine was spotless, and polished up!
However, that cherry red color was the real draw for the crowd.
Who cares about the shape as long as it sports that shade?
(smile!)
There was one more fancy car on the lot tonight, too.
What a sweet little number it was!
Who would have thought that was a kit car?
The paint was a little washed out, but the wooden dash, shaped like a heart, told of the love that went into it.
The current owner had bought it recently for only $4000.
What a deal, right?
And it was a convertible!
(smile!)

So, what had prompted these three fellows to bring their best gals to the movies with them?
A movie that was singing their song!
"Ford V Ferrari", the 2019 film based on the true story of Ken Miles, a cantankerous mechanic who could drive like no one else.
Why was that?
He listened to the car and knew just how to coax more from its metal and rubber.
But how did he come to be the driver in that 24-hour Le Mans race?
Carroll Shelby - the race car driver with his own brand of chili - believed in him, warts and all, and fought to make sure Ken was the man behind the wheel.
The sermon followed that thread, tying it to passages about God knowing who to choose to spread the message, whether others would believe in them or not.
But you know what I liked best about it?
Well, besides being with family again to watch it?
I enjoyed the international flavor: a British man driving a newly designed American car in a famous French race against skilled Italian drivers.
(smile!)

Today has been a day for finishing things up, including this sermon series.
I completed my AMC A*List earlier today, starting on Saturday with family at "Boss Baby: Family Business" - yes, even though it's movie poster didn't show up.
(smile!)
Then there's "Oppenheimer", which I doubt I will ever watch again.
Almost two years of previews for this 3-hour film, and, as a scientist, I found it almost as horrific as I had "Fat Man And Little Boy" years ago.
As a person, I found the music to be a distraction; it seemed unnecessarily threatening and heart-pounding for such a film.
I guess they just wanted to make sure people "got it" about the horror of using a quest for proof of a theory for the purpose of making bombs of death.
Ack.
The third choice was "Barbie" again, and I liked it better this time.
I again was distracted by the tight shorts, with a flat featureless front and no bulge, on the men, but i did notice that only the men sang.
That was pretty cool.
Their big dance number, too, with them all in black, felt Bollywoodish, and I liked that, too.
(smile!)

Now, if you'll pardon me, it's time for a movie of a different ilk from those, but right in keeping with the one at the church.
And, lookey there!
Alan Ruck is in it, too!
Oh, yes, he is, and this time he's a tourist that's chosen the wrong LA bus to board.
This one unwittingly becomes the express bus, forced to "Speed" along above 50 mph to keep from blowing up!
So, where does it end up?
At the airport, with miles and miles of paved road.
"I've already been at the airport," says the camera-toting guy on vacation.
Hahahaha! Hahaha!
I'm so glad AMC+ had this one to liven up my night!
Right place, right time, for me!
(smile!)
