I have been so busy with the SJCAF and now the SMF, as well as plays busting out all over just like the azaleas, I have been hard-pressed to have the time for regular movie at the cinema... but I did it this week, even with the closing of my favorite!
"John Wick: Chapter 4" was the last one for my A*List this afternoon.
I realize it's been out for at least three weeks, but the show times just weren't in my favor for almost three hours in the cinema.
Excellent movie, with some good jokes and a heartfelt ending that had me in tears...
but was exactly right.
I really loved seeing the old-time duel with the pistols!
That was beautifully staged.
Saturday found me at "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves", with Hugh Grant again showing off his excellent comedic chops.
I remember playing Dungeons & Dragons in the mid-80's with a group of fellow thespians who were big fans of it; me, not so much, as the games were so long.
The movie, though, was lots of fun!
Plus, I got a poster and a map for being there for its opening weekend!
Nice!
Oh, and did I mention that my peeps from AMC 10 are all working at the still-open southside venue, along with the ones who were already there at AMC 11.
So good to know no one was fired when the other AMC closed!
And what about that first movie?
Well, "Spinning Gold" had been at the request of mi amiga, as I said before.
So had the only A*List movie I'd seen the week before.
In fact, she'd set up the viewing of "The Lost King" with several of our friends; that can be read about in an earlier post, too.
Then, the week before that, the only A*List movie I caught was "The Jesus Revolution".
It was new to me, but it had been out a couple of weeks by the time I saw it.
Everyone else I knew who had an interest had already gone.
Still, I'm glad I managed to squeeze it in on March 20, a slow Monday.
Excellent performance from Kelsey Grammer in this documentary about a genuine religious movement in the late 60's that I knew naught about.
Hey, anything that moved hippies off drugs and gave them something to believe it...
well, that sounds like a winner to me.
(smile!)
Speaking of movies that were new to me... all of my A*List viewings fit that description since the week of February 17, which was the last week I saw something I'd already seen.
That was a second viewing of "Magic Mike's Last Dance", done mostly so it would be on my AMC dance card.
That week, I also watched "Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania" - which was a lot of light fun, as well as good for action and second chances - you know how I like those.
(smile!)
Plus, there was that musical, "The Confession," about the Amish folk!
(smile!)
Those finished out February and got me to the first week of March.
The A*List was plenty full, with the next installment of "Demon Slayer", the beautifully crafted Bill Nighy film, and then a science fiction bit with Adam Driver that had him shepherding a little girl to safety after their spaceship crashed into Earth.
The Japanese anime had not been finessed into a single film this time, but was shown in its original episodic segments.
That was not much fun.
"Living", as I wrote before, was quite lovely, though sad.
And "65" - which refers to the dinosaur period 65 million years before now - had a lot of the same spirit as "Love And Monsters", so I would have liked to see it again, had my entertainment time budget allowed.
(smile!)
That almost catches me up... almost.
There's still that week of unlikely heroes in the second week of March.
Did I say unlikely?
For real!
"Champions" featured Woody Harrelson as a basketball schmo with one too many DUI's, sentenced to coach a team of mentally challenged folks for 90 days... or a jail sentence.
The coolest part of that movie?
One of the kids, James Day Keith (who played Benny) is a genuine Special Olympics athlete.
Wow, right?!
(smile!)
"Shazam! Fury Of The Gods" continued weaving a family thread into this story of foster kids saving the world, and did so with a lot of fun mingled into the serious bits.
Hard to believe it's been four years since the first one.
Littlest girl was just two years old then.
Her bday6 party will be in two weeks!
(smile!)
And the third of that trio of themed movies?
"Creed III", which follows the now-retired boxer and family man, eight years after the movie that introduced him to boxing fans.
I actually enjoyed this one, with a kinder, gentler, Michael B. Jordan not only starring, but also producing and directing this time.
I love the message about second chances, about forgiving oneself for bad choices made in one's youth, and forgiving others, too.
Very nice way to have ended that week, and this post.
(smile!)

I forgot to mention this about "Champions": it was slap-dap FULL of Michael Franti music!!!
For real!!!
I wonder what his connection was to the movie?
What a cool backstory that would be!
I remember hearing him at the - Trustees? Lucas? - probably 25 years ago.
Fabulous concert!
Michael Franti and Spearhead opened for Ziggy Marley... and were SOOOO much better than he was!
I was dancing in the aisle, as were most of the folks there.
Good times, good times!
