45-inning vacation: the first 3.5 of the third 9

Well, enough of the Saharan dust must have moved off to allow raindrops to form.

Tonight's game had a lightning delay first, about an hour after play began.

That developed into a full-blown summer thunderstorm within thirty minutes or so.

Hey, I didn't care! I was there to have fun!

Especially since we still got to have fireworks!!!

Seriously!!!

Like I told Professor Matt, we didn't EVER get to have fireworks in the rain!

It was spectacular!!!

That's him, in a blue-flowered jacket with blue sequined shoes, looking at me whooping and hollering in joy at the fiReWoRKs!!!

We even got the full 15-minute display!!!

I even enjoyed walking in the light rain back to my car, parked over on Beach Street.

I'd been to the 4 PM screening of "Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, The Journey, The Music", a documentary from last year.

I really like that Cinematique has declared Ray Bolger a National Treasure, compiling this short little movie about the song and dance man.

I truly only knew of him as The Scarecrow from "The Wizard Of Oz"!

Guess that confirmed I was right place, right time!

As for the Cohen movie, it was very good, but was quite slow for the first 40 minutes, but perked up for the titular song.

What the film showed me was that he was a lot like John Prine, meaning you couldn't dance to his songs.

So, I know you're wondering:

what shirt was up for this game?

Well, as the theme was "Cancer Awareness", I had brought my purple Bananas especially for this bout of the Tortugas against the Flying Tigers.

The ribbon includes the names of six people dear to me and lost to cancer, starting with James Richard Lee, my only Grandpa.

The list includes Harvey Goodwin Smith, my Daddy; my Great Uncle Samuel Pasco Grantham; my stepbrother, George Deloache Barry; my mother-in-law, Patricia Elizabeth Landers; and my brother, Ronald Allen Smith.

There are also names contributed by others.

The shirt is also special to me because it was worn by my favorite Banana of all time, Bill LeRoy, catcher extraordinaire!

The shirt got a lot of attention tonight, too.

Folks at the movie talked to me about it, folks on Beach Street talked to me about it, and folks at Jackie Robinson Ballpark talked to me about it.

Or perhaps they talked to me because of it?

That could well be!

I know it provided a safe avenue of conversation for one and all.

That would include the mom and 8-year-old older brother of Alex the Warrior, a little boy who has been fighting cancer since he was 18 months old.

The shirt provided a safe avenue for the folks at the concession stand.

I had intended to have the Loaded Nachos as my dining option, but when the young man behind the counter described the Pulled Pork basket... well, how could I resist?

Plenty of pulled pork barbeque, smothered in sauce, topping a mound of french fries, with a bit of coleslaw on the side - yes, please!

I was never, ever, going to get this at Grayson Stadium!

Only $12, too, for the meal, including the bottle of Aquafina.

(That had been the cost of my movie ticket, plus chips and salsa, plus bottle of Zephyr Hills. The popcorn had been free since I am, again, a member of Cinematique.)

 

And, perhaps best of all, the shirt started a dialogue between me and the emcee, though I imagine the pulled pork helped.

That meant I had talked to someone at the concession, possibly his wife... and I had.

So Prof. Matt felt comfortable asking me about the shirt and the Bananas and asking where I was from.

And I found out he was the emcee for the Banana Ball World Tour when it hit Daytona for three games earlier this year.

Small world, isn't it?

And who is that elderly gentleman out there on the field with him?

George Bates.

He has the distinction of having been the batboy back in 1946, when Jackie Robinson played in Daytona.

Wow.

The Tortugas wore uniforms from back then, too.

Wow.

And this young woman caught two out of the three shrimp tossed as "Rock Lobster" played.

As Meat Loaf would say, "Two out of three ain't bad."

45-inning vacation: the second 9

Cincinnati had two baseball games going tonight and both ended with the same score!

How about those little red apples?

 

Yes, indeed, the Reds game against the Chicago Cubs, at the Field Of Dreams, was a loss, with them making it across home plate only twice compared to four times for Illinois.

I caught the last two innings on TV after I finally returned to my suite.

Kevin Costner may have been in the booth at one point, but was gone by the time I tuned in.

That's okay - I was just glad to have caught part of the game at that place so special to me!

And here's the nice coincidence with the Ohio team here in Daytona.

The Tortugas had scored two runs in the third inning, with the Lakeland Flying Tigers having zip.

Then, late in the game, the Tigers got two men on base and brought 'em home... then they did it again!

That was the story for both the 7th and 9th innings.

Seriously, the exact same, just different men running in!

The Tortugas lost, 2 to 4, just as their parent team would do later tonight.

And I was there for both.

Right place, right time!

And here I was tonight for Thirsty Thursday at Jacki Robinson Ballpark!

And what attire had I selected for this game?

The Sand Gnats "Cinco De Mayo" shirt, of course!

That was one of the give-away items at a 2007 game of Savannah's last MLB Single-A team.

I sure do miss those boys of summer!

And I miss the specialty give-away treasure, too, like beach towels and bobbleheads, ballcaps and umbrellas!

There's something else I miss at the games in Savannah...

the chicken finger basket!

Seriously, these aren't sold at Grayson Stadium anymore.

Nothing fried is.

And what did I have to wash down the fingers and fries?

Root beer!

32 ounces of Mugs Root Beer!

Can't get that at Grayson, either...

but it's perfect for a Thirsty Thursday!

Wondering where I was sitting this time?

Well, I was still in the cheap seats, but I was as close to the grandstand as I could get.

That gave me a great view of home plate, so I could call balls and strikes along with the umpire.

Oh, yeah!

It also set me up for this fabulous shot of three Tortugas in a row.

Speaking of nice coincidences, here's one from earlier.

I had made sure to check on the movie schedule at Cinematique before this belated bday64 adventure in baseball.

I'm so glad I did!

Three movies I had not yet seen!

The first of those was "The Gray Man", having its final screening today at 4 PM.

Perfect for bouncing across Beach Street to the ballpark after!

Ryan Gosling was wonderful in this, essentially reprising his role from "Blade Runner 2049", which I loved.

But here's the best part.

He and the boss' niece had an inside joke.

"Just another Thursday."

Right?!

And now, I'm in on that joke, too.

Very nice!

45-inning vacation: the first 9

"What about extra innings?"

Well, I'll take care of that when it arises and not before!

"And what about any rainouts???"

I don't think that'll be an issue. The dust from the Sahara Desert has rendered rain a moot point. It's also quelled anything that might have become a hurricane. As long as the dust particles are browning the sky, the baseball games are safe!

"Well that's very good news for your 5-day series of 9-inning vacations!"

For sure! And I have a different baseball shirt to wear for each game! Today's was a Savannah Bananas version from their second year... I think. I really like it! Surprisingly, I had quite a few folks looking at it, but no one said anything except a woman at the Buc-ee's. She said she likes the Bananas! Lol!

"Wonder if she's every been to a game?"

I have no idea. I'll say this, though: it was magical to be at a baseball game where everyone was paying attention to the BASEBALL GAME. I have so missed that since the Sand Gnats left!

 

"Yeah, I know. Even though those college boys play well, and even won the CPL Petit Championship again this year, the folks in the stands are mostly there for the circus. Tonight, every butt in a seat was there to cheer on the Tortugas! Very nice!" 

Well, truth to tell: I had originally thought I'd cheer for the Lakeland Flying Tigers, as they are Detroit's Single-A MLB team. And I very nearly did cheer when their 3B, Adinso Reyes, hit a home run in the 2nd inning and was flashing around third in front of me. That was the first score of the game. It was also the only run the Tigers had tonight.

"I know how hard it was for you to not cheer. You used to cheer for every man who made a good play, whatever team they were on."

So I did! I haven't done so in years, though. Plus, tonight I was amongst a bunch of locals, not tourists. No sense in causing a stir!

"Hey, they already knew you weren't from around these parts. I'm sure they would have been okay with such antics on a Wacky Wednesday!"

You may be right. Surely I was not the only non-native there! Lots of transplants, from folks moving down from colder climes, that I know. And I have my doubts that the emcee was from Daytona!

"Hahahaha! Is that a Pac-Man suit he's wearing?!"

It sure is! And he's wearing one blue suede shoe... and one pink suede one! When I commented, he smiled and said, "You have to be prepared for anything!" LOL!

"Very nice!"

In the photo to the right, he's leading the crowd in singing "Piano Man". Can you believe it! That song popping up in my life again! Right place, right time!

"And just what is in this one? Bases loaded?"

You guessed it! Bags full of potential Cincinnati Reds players! Grand slam time, baby!!! And four runs kept coming home from it, but not due to a grand slam. Still, it was quite exciting in the 8th inning!

"So, the Tortugas won, 4 to 1?"

Actually, they had a total of seven runs!!!

"I take it this is from a home run hitter?" 

Absolutely!!! The 'Tugas had a whopping three men that bopped the ball over the wall! In fact, it had looked like those homers were going to be the only scores for a while. Austin Callahan, another 3B, led the way with his in the 3rd inning. Then, in the 5th, it was Yassel Pino (1B) who scored. That's him rounding third on his way home, saluting the grandstand as he went by! And Hayden Jones (catcher) finished up the trio in the 7th. Every one of them saluted us as they ran!

"Very nice!"

It was, it truly was!

"I know you really loved that. Made the drive down all worthwhile, didn't it?"

Oh, you better believe it! Not that I don't also enjoy where I'm staying, or the other stuff I have lined up to do, but the baseball is my primary reason for being here this time. Ever since the girls' trip, when there were games but I didn't get to go, I've been wishing and hoping. I knew that the Detroit farm team would be here from the 9th through the 14th of August, so I've been waiting for an opening at the DBR.

"And, clearly, one came up!"

That it did, and I snatched it up before anyone else might might it disappear! Suite 703 is a 2-bedroom, which is more than I need, but that gave me a choice of beds. 

"Ah, yes, choice is good. And I see the view is the same as from your bedroom on the July trip?" 

It is. Happy camper am I! So blessed!

Hey, I just couldn't resist myself!

Tonight, I had dinner and a movie - not in that order - with... Sandy!

Just me and her.

No Barbara or Carolyn.

So you know what that meant, right?

Sandy talked!!!

She's rather soft spoken, which means she usually goes unheard over the nonstop babble of mi other two amigas.

That's a shame, because Sandy has something to say, and it's well-thought.

I'm so glad she joined me, first for "Nope", then at Chili's for two hours afterward!

That was right place, right time, as this odometer reading of 2 2 3 8 3 8 confirms!

That's when I was parked back in my own driveway again.

No, that mileage reading isn't a palindrome or anything of that nature, but ya gotta admit that it is kinda sorta cool, right?

And look at these gorgeous brake lights!

How wonderful they are!

I do hope folks driving behind me appreciate them!

And, hey, guess what else on this 8th day of the 8th month?

I completed my A*List trio with this fourth viewing of "Nope"!

Sandy very much liked it, too, and agreed that it definitely was not horror.

She has zero affinity for that genre, so it meant a lot that she confirmed that the movie with the horse named "Lucky" was definitely science fiction and definitely good!

The other two movies seen at AMC were "Easter Sunday" (seen solo on Friday and talked about with Alicia, Tom, Jenny, and Fred at the cinema) and "Bullet Train" (which I wrote about a couple of days ago).

So, again, two new movies and a "Nope"!

And look what I have now!

It's the King of Rock'n'Roll in "Viva Las Vegas"!

My, oh, my, Las Vegas was such a different-looking place back in 1964.

So much less glitz and a lot more desert.

But I do love this musical, with lots of burlesque and a 23-year-old Ann-Margret, and have seen it several times.

And what is the name of the race car driver that the 29-year-old Elvis was playing?

Lucky!

So, I got "lucky" twice today!

Hahahaha! Hahaha!

peter and rita meet the piano man

I'm so glad I decided to give this play another chance!

I'd driven out to Tybee for it earlier in the day, to catch the matinee.

Sadly, I was mistaken about there being an afternoon performance.

My options then were to hang out on Tybee Island for 4 1/2 hours until the evening show or to return to Savannah and count this play as a loss.

No, no, no, there had to be another choice!

And, there was: go home, then return to the Jim Ingham Black Box Theatre at the correct time.

And that time would be...?

7 PM on the 7th, of course.

Well, that "Bruce Almighty" reference certainly decided it!

That's an inside joke for me and The Universe.

(smile!)

As I had to return to town, that gave me the opportunity to get my brake lights fixed.

I had not realized both were out until Saturday, when Barbara told me.

(One has been burnt out since Paul and Cathy's visit here.)

I'd stopped at Advanced Auto Parts (which once was Western Auto) and purchased the bulbs before driving to the beach.

(Turning my headlights - and, thus, taillights - on when braking worked well to alert the driver behind me.)

I'd even brought a trio of screwdrivers - flathead, Phillips, and Frearson - to do the work.

None of those had been the tool needed for the two fasteners on each light assembly.

So when I came back to Savannah, I headed to Firestone on Skidaway.

Sure, the manager told me they could do the job... on Thursday.

Nope!

But he did tell me that Advanced Auto would do so, and for free, too.

So, across the street I bopped with my Saturn.

Jimmie told Jesse to take care of it, and he did, in less than ten minutes!

Then he fled the heat back into the store before I could give him a tip.

Free, for sure!

Back to home, with an early supper before returning to the beach once more.

I had not even known the Tybee Arts Association (TAA) troupe was back in the theatre business until I saw JinHi's post about the play on Friday.

"Prelude To A Kiss" is a fairly modern piece from the late 1980's, with a reference to some "supernatural" event that affected the romance of Peter and Rita.

That was what really grabbed me.

What could that event possibly be???

Impossible things.

Honestly, that's what it was.

It culminated with an old man bestowing a kiss on the bride's lips at her wedding.

By the play's end, we have learned much about the trio of people whose lives are changed so drastically by that simple act.

The story is as much about the elderly's wish for a lost youth as it is about youth's fear of death.

This lyric from Billy Joel's song sprang to mind.

"He says, "Son can you play me a memory?

I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

La, la-la, di-di-da
La-la di-di-da da-dum"

 

Wow.

I wonder who else might have thought the same as I?

Possibly Renée DeRossett did, as she is about my age and has a love for all music.

She played the old Dutch man, and did so amazingly well, as she has always been a great talent in everything I've seen in that space.

I doubt that either Travis Coles or Clare Ward - Peter and Rita, respectively - would have thought of "The Piano Man" as a source of understanding.

However, Kim Trammell just may have; she's another TAA veteran actress, this time cast as the mother of the bride.

As I told Renée afterward, it was truly wonderful to have seen her and Kim onstage again!

I didn't have to say "because it meant neither of you have died during the pandemic."

It's been that long since there has been theatre on Tybee.

Wait, I take it back: TAA did "The Savannah Sipping Society" earlier this summer, but I didn't find out about it until this weekend.

So, that doesn't count, does it?

Though, I would have loved seeing that one again...

six years seems so long ago!

However, this was clearly the place I was meant to me tonight.

Right place, right time, too.

How wonderful to see that trio reunited for "Bullet Train"!

I had so enjoyed them in "The Lost City", so many times!

Here's the difference: this time around, Sandra and Channing had the bit parts and Brad was the one all over the movie.

Very nice!

They work so well off each other, too.

I do hope they will be cast in other movies together - I'll certainly go to see them!

By the way, I had company at the cinema.

No, I'm not referring to the handful of folks also there in the 500-seat BigD screening room.

Barbara joined me there!

Actually, this outing today was her idea.

She's really trying to make it up to me for the snafu last weekend.

Good.

She had first approached me about having a late lunch together on Saturday.

I'd told her I wanted to see a matinee of the movie, and she even looked up the times.

Good.

Then, she said she would join me there, even though she'd already seen it.

Good!

And we both truly enjoyed it, laughing at the same places, in awe of its speed and contortions and twists and zany assassins!

Afterward, it was down the road we went to dine.

She was the one who came up with the restaurant for a change.

Good!

Carey Hilliard's is always a comfortable fit for us locals.

I thought I was going to have one thing, but I changed my mind and got the shrimp salad sandwich instead.

How very good!

The coleslaw was the perfect side dish, too, both creamy with mayonnaise.

The conversation was perfect as well.

For once, Barbara didn't try to monopolize the table, allowing me to start chains of thought from time to time.

Heck, we even had a couple of times when neither of us spoke!

That's a minor miracle right there!

Yes, this was good for both of us.

I think I may celebrate by being a nerdfighter of Kiva.

You know - do a little something to mark the occasion.

I've been with Kiva for quite a few years and have made 36 loans so far.

Bear in mind that each loan requires a minimum $25 to be invested.

So, that should indicate that I've paid Kiva nine hundred dollars for the privilege of helping others make their lives better.

However, that is not correct.

I've only invested $280 of my own funds.

Many of the loans I've made have been paid for with funds repaid by former loan recipients.

How cool is that?

Helping others to help others, just by being responsible loan makers.

Yeah, I want to do that today.

I hope I have funds enough built up from repayments.

Really good movie about perception and Texas right now. 'Vengeance.' Ashton K has the best role of his life and its completely straight.

Right? Best role of his life. Guess he's all grown up. He is 44 now.

Well, I haven't talked about A*List movies lately, so I reckon I'm gonna rectify that.

 

"You been watching Westerns??? What's up with that accent?"

 

Not just that kind of movie, but one from South Carolina and 'nother from Texas. I'll start with two weeks ago, when I saw these three. The first two were new to town, but that last one I've seen a time or three.

 

"Yeah, I agree, 'Lightyear' is definitely worth several viewings."

 

To tell the truth, I needed something positive after "Where The Crawdads Sing". That was centered on a girl who'd been abandoned by her family and her town, forced to live in the marshes of Carolina with only nature for company. Then someone dies out there, and of course she's the one they come after. Good thing it had David Straitharn in it to give it some heart. I guess I could have gone to "The Legend Of Hank: Paws Of Fury" again, but Buzz was finally leaving the cinema, so he won out. Still, I most def will be seeing that 'mother father cocker spaniel' Hank movie again, if only to cheer on that lone dog in a world of cats!

 

"That sounds like it's kin to "Isle Of Dogs"!!! How very cool!"

 

As Meat Loaf would say, you took the words right out of my mouth!

 

"I do so love that song! Now, how about your next A*List dance card?"

 

Well, the thing is, here's the thing: I forgot to take the photo of that trio. But the post title just about sums it up. I saw "Nope" on the Friday before dog-sitting, loved it so much I talked it up to Carolyn and Barbara such that I saw it with them in BigD that following Wednesday, and then I took a break into the 1970's, as I mentioned here.

 

"I see. So 'Nope' is a Western?"

 

Nope. (smile!) It's pure science fiction, set in the modern west! Jordan Peele has really hit his stride with this one!

 

"Wait a minute. I thought that was billed as a horror flick..."

 

... by people who don't understand what science fiction is. That's a shame, too. I'd be willing to bet good money that horror fans don't like this one at all. I loved it! Not only is a good story, with a beautiful and sad backdrop, but Daniel Kaluuya is magnificent on horseback! Most def good fodder for sweet dreams...

 

"Yes, dear. Nice to see you're noticing things like that."

 

Oh, you betcha I am! My percolator seems to be percolating these days! Then again, there's pollen in the air, and that floating sperm always seems to kick up the libido of all who inhale. You ever notice that?

 

"Sure, but you've wandered off the path. Don't step on any butterflies!"

 

Don't what? Oh, that was a SciFi reference! Good one!

 

"Could we hurry along, please? I do have other things to do, ya know."

 

Yeah, yeah. Okay, here's this week's haul of A*List movies. Again, the first two movies are new to town, then there's the third "Nope" I was talking about.  Funny thing about that. The alien bore a resemblance to the 'lights and mirrors' works of Chul-Hyu Ahn's art in the Jepson's PULSE exhibit. Strange that I didn't think of that when I was at the museum on Sunday.

 

"How did you like the new Pets flick?"

 

Not as much as I had hoped. "DC League Of Super Pets" was quite derivative and borrowed heavily from other recent animated films. I doubt I'll watch it again.

 

"Ouch. Sorry to hear that."

 

Hey, they can't all be Minions or Bad Guys, right? At least the other new one, "Vengeance", was superb and I was glad to have seen it. Carolyn watched with me and we both came out of the cinema talking about it and kept on for twenty minutes in the parking lot. Set in Texas, it's a good, hard, look at today's America, with so many wanting to point a finger at a conspiracy theory instead of look into their mirror. And, get this: Ashton Kutcher has the best role of his life in this movie. Honestly, I didn't recognize him at first. Gone is the doofus; he's definitely a 44-year-old man in this one. Best role of his life.

 

"Really? I mean, he was adorable in 'That 70's Show', though maybe not so much during his stint in 'Two And A Half Men'. He couldn't seem to find his character in that post-Charlie scenario, and Jake was off in the Army."
