that's 'retha franklin

Tonight, Kevin and I had the special "Tina Thursday" edition of our movie nights. (The only other time was after one of his break-ups.)
I had sung along with every song, especially enjoying "Come A Little Bit Closer"! After all, I was sitting right beside "my kind of man, so big and so strong", was I not?
(smile)
Afterward, we were chatting about the music as he drove me back to my car.
It turns out he didn't know the tune by Jay and The Americans.
In, fact, he told me he hadn't known any of the songs.
None of them.
Shiite.
And that's when the gulf between us yawned wide, yet again.
True, he has brought some new music into my life...
however, that's because he knew I liked AC/DC.
But for him to be so unfamiliar with the songs which played on the radio of the 1980's... and were still played today on stations on my car's pushbuttons... brought the age difference into full focus.
How on Earth could we dance together when he didn't even know the music?
I believe Steely Dan (how appropriate, considering the literary basis of their name) said it best in this song from "Gaucho".
(Be sure to read the write-up by the guy who posted this video. Again, totally appropriate to my situation.)

Way back when, in '67
I was the dandy of Gamma Chi
Sweet things from Boston
So young and willing
Moved down to Scarsdale
Where the hell am I?

[Chorus]
Hey Nineteen
No, we can't dance together
No, we can't talk at all
Please take me along when you slide on down

Hey Nineteen
That's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember the Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old

[Chorus]
Hey Nineteen
No, we got nothin' in common
No, we can't talk at all
Please take me along when you slide on down

The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing

The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing

The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing

[Chorus]
No, we can't dance together
No, we can't talk at all
